YMMV / Mazinkaiser

Go To

  • Awesome Music: Considering its opening and ending themes are perfored by JAM Project, enough said.
    • Even still, "Fire Wars" must be mentioned for being quite possibly the most Hot-Blooded song the group has ever churned out.
    • Let's not forget the awesome Majin Kenzan!! insert song in the movie, accompanying Mazinkaiser's triumphant return to Earth, and the ensuing Curb-Stomp Battle it inflicts thereafter (see Dynamic Entry on the main page).
    • "Theme of Mazinkaiser" by JAM Project founder (and singer of the original Mazinger Z theme) Ichiro Mizuki
    • The ED, "Tornado", is also by JAM Project, and is also awesome.
  • Best Known for the Fanservice: Despite being a bit character, the scene where Lori is introduced in her extremely revealing sling bikini in episode 4 has become a somewhat viral gif, especially on ecchi forums.
  • Fan Nickname: "Shin (真, True) Great Mazinger" for the original Great that Tetsuya Tsurugi pilots near the end of the OAV, since it's revealed the one he used at the start is an inferior copy of Juzo Kabuto's original, just like the Mazinkaiser.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Mazinkaiser was originally created so that the Mazinger franchise has a new Super Robot to keep up with newer units like the Nu Gundam and Shin Getter Robo. Comes Super Robot Wars DD where Getter Noir G, another Dynamic Production original, shares the Gigant Missile attack that Mazinkaiser uses.
  • Memetic Badass: The eponymous mech itself, thanks to it stated as being Juzo Kabuto's ultimate weapon, which is instantly proven right by just how damn unstoppable it is!
  • Narm: When Kouji and the Hover Pilder are ripped out of the Mazinger Z and thrown into the sky, does this remind you of a certain Team Rocket Running Gag?
  • Playing Against Type: It's hard to believe that Boss is voiced by Fumihiko Tachiki here. Yes, the same guy who voices Gendo Ikari.
  • Rule of Funny: Mazinkaiser applied principles of this (such as having mecha lip-synching with its pilots) to Humongous Mecha years before Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann did roughly the same.
  • Superlative Dubbing: While there are a few pronunciation-emphasis problems in the dub, (Sa-YA-ka, Ka-BU-to, Ma-ZIN-ger, etc), the acting overall is excellent; in particular, Robert Newell and John Paul Shepard are nearly perfect in their respective roles of Koji and Dr. Hell.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: "Fire Wars" sounds like a mashup of "Livin' on a Prayer" and "You Give Love a Bad Name."
  • Tear Jerker: Several parts of the General of Darkness movie. Specially this continuity's rendition of Dr. Morimori's Heroic Sacrifice, Lori and Loru's horrifying Family Unfriendly Deaths, and towards the end Kouji's incredibly heartfelt Manly Tears when he defeats the Big Bad and says he's avenged his fallen friends.
