YMMV / Marvel Heroes

Go To

  • Adorkable: Richard flirts with Ms. Marvel by trying to come up with a couple name for them. He stops when he realizes how dorky he sounds. Some of his battle banter also comes off like this.
  • Broken Base: Forget about creating Captain Firepants or Dr. Evil Pwnz0rz, you're playing as the Marvel heroes here. Depending on who you ask this is either a good thing or a bad thing. Since while some want to create their own characters, other want to play as their favorite Marvel heroes. They will also keep adding more and more heroes.
    • The introduction of PvP and especially raids: some see this as a good thing due to the game increasing in sophistication, and more gameplay options being made available; while others are unhappy at the homogenisation of hero times to kill and live, and decreased accessibility to casual players.
    • The introduction of Ultron to the set of playable characters. The fandom is divided between those who are really eager to play as the psychotic AI, and those who question his presence among the heroes and anti-heroes of the game. The in-game version is apparently based on the Mark 12 version of Ultron, which gave up its villainous tendencies, before being destroyed by another, villainous version.
    • The release of Angela is seen by some as premature or even unfinished, as multiple testers claim to have pointed out that Angela's powers are too much of a Spirit drain, that her emphasis on being a Glass Cannon is too extreme on the "glass" part, her emphasis on bleed damage being seen as outdated when compared to other heroes, and that her Signature is extremely buggy, only for these complaints to fall on death ears. Others are happy just to have her and see no problem with her skillset.
    • The buffs to underpowered heroes like Loki and Iron Man came with completely rewriting the skill set and trees, making people ecstatic and concerned about the sweeping changes.
    • The 2017 overhaul of the game, aka "The Biggest Update Ever", has split the fanbase more than anything else before. Some love it for the new and improved powers, updated and upgraded main story segments, and streamlined gameplay, while others utterly hate it, claiming it's nerfed mobility to unacceptable levels and that its casualizing the game in preparation for a rumored console release. There is pretty much no middle ground in regards to what side people are on.
  • Growing the Beard: Most people will agree that the game has improved substantially since its relatively subpar launch in 2013.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Say, wasn't Alex playing something like this?
  • Magnificent Bastard: Doctor Doom is the ruler of Latveria, and the first Big Bad of the story. Hacking into Tony Stark's archives, Doom discovers the existence of the Cosmic Cube, and seeks to harness its reality-warping powers for himself. Doom employs various supervillains to keep the heroes occupied while he continues with his plans behind the scenes, using both sides to gather various powerful artifacts for him. Once he has gathered all the artifacts, Doom promptly destroys them to ensure that they would not be used against him. He also employs Mister Sinister to clone the mutant Bishop, utilising the mutant's energy absorption powers as a conduit to safely harness the Cube's energy. With the Cube's powers, Doom intends to reshape the world in his own image. Returning from his defeat, Doom exposes the Skrull's secret invasion of Earth and forms an Enemy Mine with the heroes to stop them. A cold and taciturn schemer, Doom always stayed one step ahead of the heroes, and came close to attaining the power he had long sought.
  • Memetic Mutation: Punchclops, an attempt to create a build of Cyclops that only used melee attacks. It even spawned a webcomic.
    • Ascended Meme: When achievements were added, one of Cyclops's (aptly-named Punchclops) was for using his punch a fairly large number of times as a nod to the popular meme.
  • No Problem with Licensed Games
  • Questionable Casting: As per the casting of the Ultimate Spider-Man (2012) and the infamous recasting of the role from The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Drake Bell as Spider-Man. What makes this even more baffling is that another Spidey actor, James Arnold Taylor was already on the game as was Christopher Daniel Barnes (who voices several of Spider-Man's enhanced costumes) and could've reprised his role instead of getting the extra money to hire Bell. Josh Keaton as Captain Marvel probably isn't going to help matters with Bell.
  • So Bad, It's Good: Storm's voiceover lines.
    • "What man builds, NAY-CHA destroys!" (after destroying props in the game environment)
    • "The works of man are fragile." (same as above)
    • "Feel the THUN-DA of DEE-STRUCT-CION!" (after killing enemies)
    • "You were defeated by a GODDESS!" (same as above)
    • "By the goddess, that felt GOOOOOOD." (same as above)
    • "My life is cluttered with material possessions." (when inventory space is full)
  • Pandering to the Base: In response to the complaints about Nova listed above, Doomsaw announced that they were reversing their decision to make Sam the primary Nova and instead gave the role to the classic Richard Rider. They even announced that Rich was getting his old voice actor to sweeten the deal.
  • Tear Jerker: The announcement of the game's cancellation, especially since it was one of the few recent Marvel properties to feature characters from many licensing sources interacting in the same universe.
  • That One Attack: Mr. Hyde's tree-throwing move is a one-hit kill, and it's hard to tell where the tree will go once he picks it up.
  • That One Boss: Magneto.
    • Prior to a patch, the second form of Dr. Doom, who would render himself invulnerable for long periods of time while flooding the arena with huge, massively damaging AoE attacks on top of many smaller and still highly damaging projectiles.
    • The Loki boss fight is so hated (especially his second form) that many players either opt to forgo the +5 spirit bonus from defeating him, or choose to fight him only when massively overleveled.
    • The Deceiver is easily the hardest Mystic Mayhem boss. His DPS is through the roof, and his gimmick is that he will spawn at least three copies of himself, all with the exact same attack strength, to swarm you and tear you to pieces. The only solace is that the copies have much less health than the real one.
    • Red Skull is by far the hardest of the One Shot bosses. His primarily attack not only does massive damage, but also poisons you, and he will regularly pull out an energy minigun that can easily decimate you if you're not careful and will decimate the allied NPC's you gained during the one shot. What really makes him stand out, however, is that once his health reaches a certain threshold, he summons a HYDRA Hulkbuster, which is a boss in its own right due to its devastating attacks, including an AoE energy blast that restores half its health. Finally, Skull will summon a Hulkbuster no less than four times during the battle, during an already chaotic battle into all out anarchy.
    • When chapter 10 was first launched, Skrull Nick Fury was almost impossible to defeat solo due to the fact that the overall chapter was balanced under the assumption that it would be played by an endgame Raid team, which means the boss had mountains of health and absurdly powerful attacks that could chew through your health like paper. Thankfully, this was later patched so that while the boss is a legitimate challenge, its not next to impossible for solo players.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: The news of the Fantastic Four and Silver Surfer being Put on a Bus has not sat well with fans.
  • Unexpected Character: Ka-Zar, Rocket Raccoon and Squirrel Girl, the least obscure 'obscure comic book character' ever. Then again, it's Brian Michael Bendis we're talking about here.
  • Win Back the Crowd: The fact that this video game had a large amount of role reprisals from shows like The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes and Wolverine and the X-Men (2009) appeased a lot of fans.
