- Crosses the Line Twice: Nesta puts on blackface for a folk festival in Banbury and refuses to take it off despite Dan's pleading, which leads to a public scuffle. A crowd witnesses this and somehow Dan gets labelled a bigot.
- Harsher in Hindsight: Rik Mayall died shortly after the first series aired. Knowing this, any moment where Dan has to beat up his dad (admittedly in self-defense), can make for uncomfortable viewing.
- Jerkass Woobie: Dan's got a short fuse, but considering he's beset by several waves of bad luck in every episode, it's not hard to see why.
- Les Yay: Mum immediately latches onto Nesta when Dad passes on. Helps that Nesta is quite butch.
- Squick: At one point, Dan gets a shard of wood embedded in his face.
- Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: No matter what Dan does, he's destined to fail at whatever he puts his mind to. He fails to win back his girlfriend and is forced to put his dreams of migrating to America aside after quitting his job. By the end of the series, he's once again single, homeless and working in an even worse job than the one he had before.
