YMMV / Magu-chan: God of Destruction

Go To

  • Broken Base: Statistical evidence such as low volume sales and its short (for Shonen Jump) length heavily suggests that the series was axed, but the ending was so well received that vocal parts of the fanbase push back heavily against that notion, vehemently insisting the series ended on the author's own accord. Especially prevalent among Japanese fans, as many Japanese-only promotional campaigns and bonus material came out after the ending to an extent that was unusually high for the vast majority of series that are cancelled in Jump, save for those that later received an anime adaptation.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: With the premise of an inhuman tentacled being arising at a beach to Take Over the World, comparisons to Squid Girl were fairly common. Now that both contain a Tear Jerker where the being manages to outlive their human companion (the difference being that nobody is dreaming this time) the comparisons are not nearly as cute.
  • Heartwarming Moments: A week after the final chapter, the gag manga Protect Me, Shugomaru paid tribute by turning the 11th chapter into a Magu-chan chapter (summoned by the titular Shugomaru through a Yu-Gi-Oh card). Kei Kamiki even provided the art. The chapter ends with Shugomaru sobbing saying how he'll miss Magu-chan.
  • Memetic Mutation: The series lasted far longer than anyone would expect given its low sales (over a year-and-a-half when most Shonen Jump series ended in less than six months). This lead to many jokes that every other series that ended during its run was a Human Sacrifice to sate Mag Menuek's hunger.
  • The Scrappy: Yuika Oze's introduction as a bratty child garnered her no fans.
  • Tear Jerker: Chapter 77, the final chapter. After many years, Ruru passes away from old age, leaving Magu-chan distraught. The Holy Knights then come to seal him away again, and he turns himself over to them willingly. He asks Muscar to take his seal to the depths of the ocean, and Nosu Koshu gives him a parting gift. Within the crystal, Magu-chan dreams over and over of the simple days he spent with Ruru. She then suddenly reappears to him, to reassure him that she'll always be with him.
  • Ugly Cute: Arguably Magu himself.
  • The Woobie: Zonze Ge with his never-ending anxiety and constant self-deprecation.
