YMMV / Magic (Boom!)

Go To

  • Angst? What Angst?: Everyone but Vraska took Jace's death ridiculously lightly. Chandra has it the worst. Considering that she worked with him for about a year in the Gatewatch, it took her absurdly little time to process it.
  • Ass Pull: Jace's sacrifice doesn't seem necessary if Kaya's plan works. If Marit Lage gets what she wants on Amonkhet, she shouldn't have any motive to chase Jace back to Ravnica.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: In issue 4 Lazav visits the trio's dream. Unfortunately for Ral, he's in the middle of an anxiety dreamwhere he tries to get machinery to work while for some reason being completely naked. Lazav then proceeds to materialize a pair of pants around him without any warning, resulting in Ral being thoroughly weirded out.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The second arc makes it a Running Gag that Chandra hates being a leader despite being the most qualified planeswalker present. A few months later in early 2023, Phyrexia: All Will Be One ended with Nissa and Jace compleated, leaving Chandra as the last founder and only senior member of the Gatewatch, and therefore the most qualified to be their leader.
  • Ho Yay: In issue #21, Liliana calling Chandra to Strixhaven and them drinking together (worth noting is that they drink after planeswalking, meaning that the drink would have gone rancid in the blind eternities). When Liliana realizes that Isona is going to do something horrible, the final panel of the issue is of Chandra holding her protectively.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Quite a few examples.
    • Marit Lage's supplicants have a tendency to turn into tentacled horrors. When Jace tries to read their minds he's infected with a Mind Virus that renders him catatonic.
    • In issue 10 Jace is killed by Marit Lage via Colony Drop. In the next panel we get a lovely bird's eye view of the scene, which assures us that there's no way in the world he could have survived that.
    • The cover of issue 15 features the first trio trapped behind ethereal bars. Vraska is panicked, but Kaya and Ral just sit back with blank expressions. It's just... off.
  • Shocking Moments: The death of Jace Beleren, the face for the Gatewatch and the most iconic character seen in promotional material (aside from Chandra). Killing them fully cements that the writers don't give a damn about canon.
  • Unexpected Character: Marit Lage, the Big Bad of the first arc, came rather out of left field. It has mostly been a bit of background fluff with little to no impact on the plot for all of Magic's history, not to mention that it is based on a plane completely different from the one where the story takes place.
