YMMV / Madison Rayne

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Era: Late 2010-2012 became this for her. After the seeming conclusion of the Beautiful People feud, with Angelina Love reclaiming the title now as a top face - she still ended up top heel once again by winning the title in a Fingerpoke Of Doom. Then her feud with Mickie James dragged on. And when Gail Kim returned, she and Madison instantly became Knockouts Tag Team Champions. Madison even ended up with a push against Gail for the title while they were both still Tag Team Champions. Her next Knockouts title win was even still counted, despite her winning it when Earl Hebner blatantly favored her in the decision. Her being Put on a Bus for her pregnancy, and subsequent return now as a Face helped break her out of it - as Gail had grown into an even bigger Creator's Pet, making Madison the lesser of two evils by default.
  • Creator's Pet: Starting in 2010 she suddenly went from Jobber to being a career killer - retiring Tara and Roxxi, and trying to do the same to Angelina Love. For the whole year, the universe seemed to be conspiring to keep her as Knockouts Champion - cutting off Angelina Love's momentum at the heels to force a program with Mickie James (which didn't need to include the title). She also cut off Velvet Sky's momentum by pulling a dirty finish after the latter's battle royal win (and it led to a rather pointless Evil vs. Evil match against Gail Kim, where they were both heels and went back to being friends afterwards like nothing happened). She also ended up with a pointless title reign in 2012 when she defeated Brooke Tessmacher with Earl Hebner's help. This did level off after her pregnancy and subsequent return however.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: At one point in TNA, she threatened to sue Velvet Sky and Angelina Love over the Beautiful People name after she was kicked out... as it turns out, relations between Madison and the other BP members have broken down in real life.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: She and Lacey Von Erich taped a match for Wrestlicious teaming together, where they were referred to as "Team Beauty" (they were facing "Team Beast" of White Magic and Draculetta). This was taped in 2008 and actually aired while Madison and Lacey were in the Beautiful People.
  • Narm
    • Her first run as TNA Knockouts Champion. Even putting aside the Beautiful People being what they were, Madison Rayne had never won a one on one match in her entire TNA career up to that point.
    • The response to most of her angle with Brittany was less than enthusiastic. Unlike, say, Stevie Richards and Raven in ECW, Brittany had been in TNA a noticeable amount of time without any hint or prior build up to her being a Madison Rayne fan girl, making the revelation seem like an ass pull. Them being abruptly thrown together wasn't helped by them never advancing beyond the awkward phase of conversation and them never accomplishing anything resembling success in the ring when they worked together. The "reveal" that Brittany was perhaps too into Madison wasn't particularly shocking given her prior role in TNA as Orlando Jordan's valet and the fact the angle had been done before but still felt like a rushed conclusion, given one needed to keep up with the B Show just to see the sparse amount of development. Then it was hard to get into the idea of them feuding because after one fluke win, Brittany had done nothing in TNA besides lose matches, including matches against Rayne. When they finally got to feuding, Brittany continued to lose every match she participated in.
    • During a New York show in 2015, the piss was taken out of what was otherwise a vicious and disturbing assault on Gail Kim and Taryn Terrell using the steel steps by the crowd chanting "We want puppies!"
  • Never Live It Down: For ages, the infamous match at Slammiversary 2010 where Roxxi was suddenly forced into putting her career on the line against Madison's title. Diva Dirt had to do damage control by reminding fans that Madison didn't book the angles herself.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy:
    • Madison vs Angelina Love at Victory Road 2010 by all accounts should be remembered as a great match (see below), but it's unfortunately remembered by the unbelievably terribly booked ending - which made no sense from a storyline point of view.
    • For that matter, Madison's whole TNA career tends to be eclipsed by the amount of times she's won or lost titles in silly fashion. Out of her five Knockouts title wins, only one of them occurred by her simply beating the champion in a normal singles match.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: In an odd case, TNA fans have come to accept Madison Rayne the wrestler but they STILL hate her entrance theme, Killer Queen, if a song itself can be in the scrappy heap.
  • The Scrappy: She was the least popular member of The Beautiful People despite being regarded as the best wrestler after Angelina Love, who ended up on hiatus, making her the best by default. First off, fans weren't too into her being a double champion with freebird rule on top of it. Then they hated her career killer gimmick. Then she "won" the belt again in a Finger Poke of Doom match and proceeded to have a very ineffectual run as champion...a lot of unpopular angles caused people to Shoot the Messenger since Madison Rayne kept ending up in the center of them.
  • Strangled by the Red String: When Gail Kim returned to TNA, she and Madison suddenly acted like the best of friends - complete with Ho Yay mannerisms. There was zero explanation for this friendship beyond the influence of Karen Jarrett, as Madison wasn't even in the company when Gail originally was.
  • Take That, Scrappy!:
    • It's happened a few times, but the most memorable is Eric Young finding her screaming so unbearable that he just picks her up and shuts her in a locker.
    • Her screechy voice is one of the biggest sources of Madison Rayne's heat, both good and bad. For those who give it bad head as well, Sting mocking her was Funny Moment for the ages, which can be seen here.
  • Took the Bad Film Seriously: Her and Angelina Love had a match at Victory Road 2010 that ended with an infamously awful twist and caused fans everywhere to groan. The match itself however was seen as one of their best encounters.
