YMMV / Luck (2022)

Go To

  • Awesome Music: Eva Noblezada's cover of ''Lucky Star'' showcases her incredible singing voice in addition to voicing Sam.
  • Critical Dissonance: In spite of the critics' mixed reviews about the film (49% on Rotten Tomatoes), audiences reacted much more favorably to the film, with a 74% film rating.
  • They Copied It, So It Sucks!: One of the biggest criticisms aimed at the film from critics and viewers was how it tried a bit too hard at replicating Pixar and their films in terms of its themes and setting, right down to having an identical art style. It didn't help that the film came out at a point in which animation studios were starting to divert away from replicating Pixar's style in favor of more unique and experimental styles that have been very well-received across the board, making Luck's attempts at channeling Pixar all the more egregious. Of course, much of this can be boiled down to the film being done by several former staff members at Disney/Pixar, on top of Skydance Animation being headed by former Pixar head honcho John Lasseter.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: A common criticism of the movie is that its thesis on bad luck not being always bad is rather underexplored. The human world gets a blast of good luck, then of bad luck, then gets cut off from the Luck World entirely - but we never get to actually see it directly, just the colors of the luck lines - and the Aesop about bad luck's importance comes fairly late and near the end.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: Babe's desire to create an utopia where nothing bad happens is hard to reason against, with the counter-arguments being mostly happenstances that could theoretically occur had there only been good luck.
  • The Woobie:
    • Sam. She was Born Unlucky, having ended up in foster care system at a young age and never getting adopted, constantly loses stuff, and is frequently hit with unfortunate obstacles and setbacks.
    • Hazel, especially after her weekend visit gets cancelled and she fears she will end up like Sam and age out of the foster care system without getting adopted. Fortunately, things get better for her.
