YMMV / Lapis Re:LiGHTs

  • Awesome Music:
  • Crosses the Line Twice: In Episode 4, Tsubaki starts crying fake tears and wipes her eyes with a "handkerchief". Kaede snatches it from her hand and discovers it's actually one of her pairs of panties. Tsubaki then reveals she stole a second pair of Kaede's panties in case she lost the first then gleefully pulls one of Nadeshiko's stolen bras from her cleavage.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Lavie is extremely popular compared to the rest of her unit. Her incredibly enthusiastic and childish behavior, the humor derived from her stupidity, and her character design seems to appeal to a lot of fans.
    • From the same unit, Lynette is also much more popular due to her being an Adorkable yuri fan and being incredibly endearing with her clumsiness, her love of books and romance novels, and her determination to do her best for her team in spite of her lacking.
    • Despite only making a proper appearance halfway through the anime's run (and not even appearing in the opening animation until Episode 7), Garnet has garnered herself a very large fanbase who are quite fond of Stalker without a Crush tendencies and her numerous touchy-feely moments with Emilia, who she considers "the only friend she needs".
    • After getting substantial time in the spotlight during Episodes 7 & 8, Maryberry has become incredibly popular due to her adorable shyness, her growing confidence, and her usefulness as a Gadgeteer Genius when LiGHTs needs the calibrate and set-up the equipment for an Opera in a hurry.
  • Fanfic Fuel:
    • Ray's adventures and performances pre-disbandment, especially their days saving Ryuuto from magical monsters.
    • Yue's time under Eliza's tutelage, when the latter decided to stay in Ryuuto to help the country rebuild.
    • How exactly Ashley and Lavie became friends after coming from two different countries and Lavie being aware of Ashley's secret hobby of plush toys.
    • The 2 years, 3 months, and 14 days Rosetta spent in Flora Girls' Academy before Tiara decided to enroll. It's especially interesting as all the other members of LiGHTS could conceivably have enrolled with Rosetta.
    • Konohana wa Otome in Yamato, when they were still known as BLOSSOMS performing pure rock and packing concerts full. There is also the creative slump that led to them returning home for a period of time and the events of Episode 4.
  • Foe Yay Shipping: There's substantial fan interest in Tiara x Yue. Though Yue is more of an Unknown Rival to Tiara, there are canon moments that have heavy homosexual subtext like Manga!Yue knowingly entering the bath when Tiara thought she would be alone.
  • Genius Bonus: LiGHTs' insert song in the anime, is titled "In the sky of 700,000,000,000,000,000,000,000". While 700 sextillion may seem like a strangely huge and arbitrary number, it's a reference to Sagan's number, which is the estimated number of stars in the observable universe. However, it should be noted that Sagan's number is currently widely estimated to be 70 sextillion, rather than 700 sextilion, or one less zero.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: While Yuzuriha massaging a student and leading her away to the cabaret club in Episode 8 was intended to be played for laughs, some viewers were perturbed by the fact that the student was likely not fully aware of her situation, and thus could not properly consent to what Yuzuriha was asking of her.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In Love Live!, Yoshino Nanjo voiced Eli Ayase, the Student Council President of Otonokizaka High School and an Obstructive Bureaucrat who tries to obstruct μ's from putting on their first performance to save the school from closing. Notably, despite her actions, she cannot actually prevent μ's from performing because the school's director can overrule her decisions. Here, she voices Chloe, who is Flora's director and actually can do what Eli could not. Humorously, while μ's decision to start an idol group and perform was independent of Eli's actions, it is Chloe deducting points from LiGHTS that makes them decide that they have to perform in order to avoid flunking out. Episode 7 of this series also ends in a similar manner to Episode 1 of Love Live!, with the protagonist group requesting permission from Nanjo's character to sanction their idol activities.
  • Les Yay: Has its own page.
  • Memetic Mutation: Reaction images featuring Lynette or her many enthusiastic and supportive lines about a romance between girls are frequently used whenever discussing or making fun of the series' abundance of Les Yay.
  • Spiritual Successor: The game is widely considered to be this to Battle Girl High School, due to the numerous similarities in the plot, setting, and the Player Character's interactions with the girls.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: The art style is very bright, colorful, and friendly, and the mix of Idol Singer and Magical Girl elements seems like this will be an incredibly whimsical adventure aimed at young children. Then you have all the scenes of violence, monsters that most definitely look terrifying and disturbing, the entirety of Episode 6 of the anime, all the full-body nudity in the bath scenes, the jokes like Tsubaki happily stealing and displaying her younger sisters' stolen underwear in public... the list goes on and on. There is also the short-lived mobile game being explicitly a gacha; the similarity to gambling aside there are many numerous sexy outfits that expose far more skin than children should see.
