  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Howard Elkins' suicide via Boom, Headshot! using a rifle that he purchased at a Walmart. To this day, there are many Walmarts in the United States that sell firearms with few restrictions, which has been met with considerable controversy in recent years in light of the rising number of mass shootings.
    • Newsday reporter Oscar Corral wrote this book on the murder of a woman who received death threats. Years later when he went to work for the Miami Herald, Corral had published a rather incendiary article criticizing the U.S. government for spending hundreds of millions of dollars in promoting democracy in Cuba. This sparked an outrage in the Cuban-American community who accused Corral of being a communist, with some going as far as sending death threats to him and his family, forcing them to move away.
    • Karina's murder case being accused of being of low priority to the police back in 1999 still resonates well into the present day. Despite race relations being slightly better, cases involving racial and ethnic minorities are still frequently placed under the rug in favour of focusing on white victims. The fact that the two good NYPD detectives successfully solved the murder of a brown Latina woman at the hands of a white man was certainly impressive for its time.
    • Even today, pregnant women are still likely to become victims of murder as result of said pregnancy.
