YMMV / Jump Super Stars

Go To

  • Cult Classic: While neither game was released overseas, they've become popular in the sprite artist and M.U.G.E.N communities thanks to their simplistic artsyle.
  • Fan Nickname: The games' artstyle is often referred to as "JUS-style" or just "JUS" in sprite artwork circles.
  • Fridge Brilliance: The choice of making Mashirito the Big Bad seems unusual considering he is Laughably Evil compared to the other, more serious antagonists. However, the majority of protagonists are of the Power attribute, thus putting them at a disadvantage against him.
  • Game-Breaker:
    • Support characters in general can be easily exploited since they can be activated while blocking or being comboed, but Seiya 3, Trunks 3, and Sena 3 are some of the most broken assists in the game. Seiya 3 delivers a wide flurry of punches from over the opponent that are hard to dodge/block and guarantee a knock-down. Trunks 3 comes out fast, deals a decent bit of damage, and knocks the enemy away, making it perfect for ring-outs. Sena 3 is unblockable, flips your opponent in the opposite direction, and stops them from moving.
    • Dio Brando's strongest version has his The World Special, which paralyzes every opponent on the screen, on top of his other Special that has high priority and nicely damaging Rapid-Fire Fisticuffs.
    • Taikobo is a real bitch to approach thanks to his normals. His 6 Koma Special 1 deals MASSIVE damage, and almost always guarantees Ring-outs.
    • Dr. Mashirito 8 has a beam attack as a normal move and one of the biggest health bars (given that he's the true final boss).
    • One of Raoh's normal attacks instantly covers him with a giant energy explosion that hits in all directions with ridiculous range. He also has one of the biggest health bars.
    • Vegetto's Vegetto Sword starts with an instant burst of energy in all directions that stuns enemies long enough for them to get hit by the following energy sword. Not only is this one of the strongest attacks in the game, but it makes the opponent spin in the air and potentially fall to their death with no chance to recover. Vegitto also has a powerful Kamehameha special that is hard to predict, as it makes him teleport in any desired direction.
  • Scrappy Mechanic: In Jump Ultimate Stars, guarding is extremely effective against any character that doesn't have the guard break ability, since it blocks all damage, including specials. This becomes frustrating in later missions, as the AI is programmed to guard as soon as you press the attack button. The guard breaker attacks are supposed to counter this, but they are too slow and give the opponent ample time to sucker punch you.
  • Sequel Displacement: The two Jump Stars games were preceded by One Piece Grand Battle: Swan Colosseum and were followed by three more One Piece-focused games, but are still the most well-known in the series thanks to their crossover aspect.
  • That One Boss:
    • 7 and 8 Koma Naruto in JUS has an innate ability that makes him guard automatically when not attacking, at the cost of SP. This makes landing hits on him painfully frustrating.
    • The final boss of JUS pits you in a timed 2-on-1 match against Frieza and Buu in a slippery ice stage. After that, the True Final Boss shows up: Dr. Mashirito and his Caramelman J form at his highest Komas, with specials that hit like a truck, especially if you happen to be using a Power character.
