YMMV / Jennifer Lopez

Go To

  • Award Snub: She won critics' awards for Hustlers but was not nominated at the 2020 Oscars.
  • Awesome Music:
    • "On the Floor". Don't deny it.
    • "Love Don't Cost A Thing" is also insanely catchy. The Spanish language version is even better.
  • Best Known for the Fanservice:
    • Her big rear tends to be always brought up whenever she's mentioned. There were even wild rumors that she had it insured — to which she responded, "Who would do that?"
    • Her famous Navel-Deep Neckline dress is another one. Google's image search engine was created because of it.
  • Captain Obvious Aesop: The moral of "Jenny from the Block" seems to be that rich people still have day-to-day lives that are simply flashier than yours.
  • Fandom Rivalry: Her fans do not get along with Mariah Carey fans (see Overshadowed by Controversy below).
  • Funny Moments: Her appearance on Carpool Karaoke with James Corden. He decides to scroll through her phone and send a text to Leonardo DiCaprio - saying "Hey, baby, I feel like I need to cut loose. Any suggestions?" - and he signs it 'J-Lo'. It gets a reply, to which Jennifer collapses laughing.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Her duet with Lin-Manuel Miranda after the Pulse nightclub shootings, Love Make the World Go Round.
    • Her and Ben Affleck getting back together after having been broken up for almost two decades.
  • Memetic Mutation: The practice of referring to celebrities named Jennifer as J-[first syllable of last name], such as J.Hud for Jennifer Hudson and J-Law for Jennifer Lawrence, began with J.Lo. It's even extended to people who aren't named "Jennifer", including men; for example, Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson were frequently called "K-Stew" and "R-Pattz" when they were dating, and Doctor Who fans occasionally call Peter Capaldi "P-Caps".
  • Once Original, Now Common: While her music has remained consistently popular for decades, it can be difficult for modern audiences to appreciate why J.Lo was considered an important and influential sex symbol in her heyday—and it can be really hard for some people to believe that she was once known for having a big butt. Lopez has been physically fit throughout most of her life, and she's fairly skinny by modern standards—but she had a noticeably curvaceous figure compared to most celebrities in the 1990s, when the so-called "heroin chic" trend was still prominent. In the 2010s, wide hips and round buttocks came back into prominence as a "mainstream" female beauty standard, and the pressure to be skinny was largely supplanted by pressure to be curvy. Compared to more recent sex symbols like Nicki Minaj, Megan Thee Stallion, and Kim Kardashian, her figure might not strike some people as particularly remarkable.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: Though it was a No. 1 hit in the US, "I'm Real" doesn't go discussed without bringing up the dispute with Mariah Carey over the rights to a sample of Yellow Magic Orchestra's 1978 cover of the Martin Denny song "Firecracker", thanks to an ugly divorce between Carey and Sony Music executive Tony Mottola that resulted in the latter giving Lopez the "Firecracker" sample instead as revenge. As a result of just how ugly the whole situation with the sample was, discussion of "I'm Real" is typically eclipsed by the "Firecracker" spat. Said incident also tends to define talk about "Loverboy" (the song Carey meant to use the sample for) as well, but "I'm Real" tends to be hit harder as a result of it being released with the YMO sample first.
  • She Really Can Act: Was noted as a terrific and versatile actress pre-J.Lo days; Roger Ebert remarked several times during that period that she was among his favorite actresses. During the 2000s she starred mostly in romantic comedies, putting her into two ghettos with audiences, in addition to the Hype Backlash against her A-list fame. Her performance in the movie Hustlers got her almost universal praise.
  • Signature Song: Mixed reception aside, "Jenny from the Block" is arguably J. Lo's most recognizable song; the song's title became a second nickname for her and numerous pop culture references were made towards the song since. Helps that it is also an ear worm.
  • Tear Jerker: During one of her performances, J.Lo announced that her daughter Emme was officially coming out as non-binary and invited them to sing with her. It's safe to say some fans got really emotional over this moment.
