YMMV / Jack Reacher: Never Go Back

Go To

  • Catharsis Factor: The Hunter is such a smug, reprehensible Psycho for Hire, especially after he targets Sam, that watching Reacher break his arms, leg, and neck is nothing short of euphoric.
  • Complete Monster: The Hunter is a smug, egotistical former soldier-turned-hitman under the employ of General Harkness. The Hunter kicks off the plot by killing two of Major Susan Turner's soldiers, and then planting the evidence that gets Turner falsely thrown in jail for espionage. When Jack Reacher and Turner's lawyer Moorcroft start looking into the conspiracy, the Hunter tortures and kills Moorcroft, pinning this crime on Reacher. Relentless in his pursuit of Reacher and Turner, the Hunter callously murders anyone that comes into his path, including two policemen, the foster parents of Samantha Dutton (Reacher's supposed daughter), and even his own allies and subordinates. He goes on to state that killing Reacher "won't be enough", and says that he's going to kill Samantha personally, just to hurt Reacher. Even after Harkness is arrested and the conspiracy is uncovered, the Hunter simply replies that he "doesn't give a shit" and continues to hunt for Sam, eventually catching her and attempting to force Reacher to surrender by threatening to throw her off a building. A cold-blooded killer motivated solely by feeding his own ego, the Hunter is one of Reacher's most personal adversaries.
  • Heartwarming Moments: The ending. Reacher drops off Sam at high school, and before she goes inside, she runs back and hugs Reacher tightly. She even slips him a phone and Reacher later receives a text from Sam at the end.
  • Moment of Awesome: The final fight scene manages to score points for being even more brutal than the final fight in the first one. First Reacher tackles the Hunter off the roof, then the two exchange some nasty punches until eventually, it all culminates in Reacher telling the Hunter, "Look at me. You look at me." Followed by Reacher punching the Hunter so hard it causes his neck to snap, and then chucking his corpse off the roof.
  • Moral Event Horizon: The Hunter crosses it by targeting Sam just to hurt Reacher, and later for the heck of it.
  • The Scrappy: Sam was not the most popular character in the movie, either because of her attitude, Idiot Ball moments, or general character that made her feel like an unnecessary kid sidekick that Reacher could have done without. Though she redeemed herself to some by getting some growth over the course of the movie.
  • Sequelitis: Was not as well-received among critics or audiences as the first film was.
