YMMV / Inspector Gadget 2

Go To

  • Awesome Music: "Get... Up, up up! Whoa whoa, up up up!"
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: The scene where G2 splits herself in a half. While Detachment Combat is not out-of-place at all for a Ridiculously Human Robot, it's still bizarre by Inspector Gadget standards. It is never mentioned again throughout the rest of the film, nor do G2 ever use this "gadget" again.
  • Broken Base: The fans are divided between those who despised the first film for being virtually nothing like the cartoons, those who hated the second film for not being enough like the first, those who still hated the second film but found it better than the first, people who hated both films equally and prefer to stick to the cartoons, and finally the people who liked both films. All of the above is without taking onto consideration the people who liked either (or both) of the movies, but disliked the cartoons.
  • Character Rerailment: Claw is now more true to his appearance and personality from the cartoons, such as speaking with a gravelly voice and his face is never fully shown to the audience.
  • Contested Sequel: Despite critical reception being even worse than that of the first film, audiences are divided as to whether it is better or worse than the 1999 film. The film dropped most of the better aspects of the first film, including the high-quality cast, and the large budget was cut drastically. On the other hand, it was given props for following the cartoon's formula more closely than its predecessor.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Both this film and Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleashed are two films that try to undo the first film's perceived mistakes with the source material.
  • Informed Wrongness: Throughout the film, Gadget continually tells Penny that she can't help in the case because it's dangerous for a child. When one of her clues ends up being critical in finding out Claw's location after she's been kidnapped, he relents and says he should have given her a chance... even though he was completely right about it being dangerous for her.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Dr. Claw is a hammy, mysterious supervillain who schemes to rob Riverton's Federal Reserve with style and flourish. Escaping prison following his capture in the first film, Claw has reinvented himself to be a cool, threatening presence, devising a plan to create his "time displacement laser" and freeze all of Riverton in time. Claw disguises himself and his gang as a band to stealthily steal a priceless ruby and hacks Inspector Gadget's robotics to throw a science convention into chaos while he steals a protoid laser, gathering all the parts needed for his superweapon. Successfully freezing Riverton and its citizens, Claw robs the Federal Reserve before taking Gadget's niece Penny as a hostage, using threats to her life and weapons built into his escape vehicle to fight off Gadget. Even when Gadget has him dead-to-rights, Claw uses a backup emergency rocket to flee justice, promising that he'll be back to defeat Gadget next time.
  • Narm: G2 and the Gadgetmobile saddened (the latter one crying) over Gadget and Penny's Disney Death by the explosion caused by the kart with explosives that Penny was tied, and then getting excited to find out that they are still alive.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Like its predecessor, this film saves the iconic Gadget-Copter until the climax.
  • Pandering to the Base: Some fans may be irked by not seeing Claw's face and Gadget not being referred to as "Uncle John", changes that were made to satisfy fans of the cartoon who hated the deviations that the first film made to the source material.
  • Retroactive Recognition: It took people some years to find out that the woman who plays G2 is no other than Meredith Blake herself.
  • Special Effect Failure: As a result of this film having a lower budget than the first film, most of the CGI looks too cartoonish. Also, the use of Chroma Key ranges from "okay" to "completely bad". Both are especially noticeable in the Gadget-Copter scene.
