  • Broken Base: Hated by the regular Idolmaster fanbase but pretty well liked by mecha fans for having a Macross-like premise of merging mecha with idols.
  • Periphery Demographic: A really interesting case - the Idolmaster franchise obviously targets men 18 and above, but this particular series is the favorite version of the franchise to mecha fans who are not fond of the Idol Genre. This puts Xenoglossia in a interesting position where it mostly appeals to a fandom outside its own franchise.
  • Squick: The fact that Azusa was in a romantic (and possibly sexual) relationship with her adoptive father. Said father is long dead by the time the story begins, so this is only seen in a brief scene in a flashback, but even a scene this short can leave a big, very negative impact on viewers.
  • Vindicated by History: In a sense - while it's still looked down upon by fans of the franchise, the reaction nowadays isn't as harsh as it was when it first came out, mainly due to the existence of a faithful adaptation. With the fandom no longer having to worry about Xenoglossia being the main representative of the franchise for anime fans, it is now satisfied in leaving the anime alone as this somewhat forgotten, weird curiosity from years ago. It's also seen as a decent mecha anime by fans of that genre, and even some of its haters agree that if one can pretend it's an independent project rather than part of a franchise, it becomes easier to enjoy the series.
