  • Harsher in Hindsight: Connor's distrust and angry questioning over the issue of whether Elise had used her Compelling Voice on them returns to bite him in the ass come book two, when he actually commits the act on her. Admittedly, it wasn't really him, but he has a lot of guilt over it.
  • The Woobie:
    • Oh, Philip. Where to start.
      • He is an Aspie, which gives him trouble in relating to others and gets constantly referred to as "cold" or "emotionless". Not helped at all by his blunted affect.
      • Bullied at school because of being a good student and Teacher's Pet.
      • Physically and verbally abused at home because his father hates him for indirectly causing his mother's death and saddling the Lanes with a demon vessel in the form of a child.
      • Spends his life constantly second-guessing himself and maintaining his image of an Anti-Hero because he honestly believes he is incapable of empathy and other human emotions.
      • Is implied to take anti-anxiety medication.
