- Akari is popular amongst LGBTQ fans for being a heavily implied trans character in an early 2000s kid's comic, nevermind a Pokémon manga.
- Kaede has her queer fans due to her boyish looks combined with her friendship with Erika (who herself has an LGBTQ fanbase).
- Values Dissonance: The last page of Akari's chapter shows him in a skirt again, implying that he began to like being a girl after coming to terms with Pikachu being both cute and cool. This implies that he only felt like a boy because of gender roles and a desire to be "cool". Akari "outgrowing" being trans is a common stereotype in media, especially Japanese media.
