YMMV / Honey Popcorn

Go To

  • Contractual Purity: The Korean public was very critical about Honey Popcorn's debut because all of the members are porn stars and even debuted under their Porn Names. Part of the criticism towards their debut comes from the fact that many Korean Pop Music fans are underage, and the public is very concerned about them finding their adult work with a quick search of their names on the Internet.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Despite the frigid reception from South Korea and Japan, international fans have been quite supportive of them. While South Korea is protesting against them and Japan has a mix of people both laughing at them and feeling embarrassed, international fans have only been saying good things about them.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: Honey Popcorn's debut has a pretty standard Girl Group formula, and "Bibidi Babidi Boo" actually isn't bad. However, the song is mainly overshadowed by the fact that all members are porn stars. The Korean public made petitions calling for their debut to be cancelled, and it got to the point where their debut showcase had to be delayed. In addition, Honey Popcorn debuted when the #MeToo movement was gaining steam in Korea, and Korean feminists consider them a step back from the causes they were fighting for.
  • Values Dissonance: The Western fandom, for the most, don't consider the fact that Honey Popcorn are comprised of porn stars a big deal, since celebrities having sex tapes and scandals are common to the point no one bats an eye. However, in South Korea, pornography is illegal, hence their reaction.
    • In Japan, it's common for porn stars to have roles in mainstream entertainment. For example, Ebisu Muscats is an Idol Singer Girl Group comprised of just porn stars and gravure idols, and some porn stars have even had roles in shows intended for children, like the Super Sentai series. note  In South Korea, this wouldn't happen.
