YMMV / Heretics of Dune

Go To

  • Contested Sequel: As is usual for Dune books following the first, this book has equal parts supporters and detractors. Supporters praise it for its philosophical musings, similar to God-Emperor of Dune, more varied characters, exploration of the long-term consequences of Leto II's Golden Path, increased world-building, and Miles Teg. Detractors point to the very Slow-Paced Beginning and focus on dialogue and narration style slowing the pacing of the storynote .
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Miles Teg, definitely.
  • Franchise Original Sin: Heretics of Dune is a slow-paced work with lots of dialogue and narration, making the story feel quite slow at times. Most of these issues were present in God-Emperor of Dune, but unlike Heretics, God-Emperor has Leto II delivering a lot of the dialogue, with much of the narration being from his point of view. Leto II's long life and vast collection of other memories give him a unique perspective, making his point of view very engaging to read. Heretics, however, continues on in a similar style, but lacks Leto's entertaining presence. God-Emperor's slow pace also allowed for Leto's master plan to unravel over the course of the story, while Taraza's plan is much more vague, and the story barely indicates any plan being in place.
  • Narm: Many of the characters refer to the Honored Matres as 'whores'. However, practically every scene the Matres are mentioned, someone will immediately call them 'whores'. It's almost a Phrase Catcher due to its frequency.
