YMMV / Hercules (2015)

Go To

  • Broken Base: Fans of the Incredible Hercules are not exactly fond of Abnett trying to get the character to clean up his act. Some argue that it's an interesting change which makes the character a better example of a hero, others think it takes away many of the traits which made the character fun and interesting in the first place. And others think the "true heroes don't act this way" message is misguided when the older series played Hercules as a heroic figure and an occasional good influence on Amadeus Cho despite his vices. Abnett's insistence on constantly reminding the reader that they're wrong for liking the old Hercules as a hero rubs a lot of fans the wrong way as well.
  • Narm: Cryptomnesia is a hard character to legitimately fear as a villain. Though the implication is that he's supposed to be a sort of Giggling Villain who's confident to the point of irritating, he constantly speaks in internet slang and comes across as what a Gen-Xer THINKS Millennials sound like. In Issue #3 of Gods of War, when the eponymous Gods of War and the Avengers are arguing about how to stop Hercules, Cryptomnesia and the rest of the Storm are literally standing right next to them, making faces. That's had a lot of fans wondering: are these guys supposed to be a deadly, world-destroying threat, or fifth graders?
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: Axel Alonso managed to irritate Hercules' LGBT fanbase in the run-up to the new series by insisting that Hercules will not retain the bisexual tendencies he's displayed in previous series. Because of this "No Bi, No Buy" is a regular boycott mantra.
  • Spiritual Successor: Many have noted how similar this run's story is to Neil Gaiman's American Gods. A plot centered around the rise of new gods born out of modern society, trying to erase the old pantheons to replace them, only for the mythological characters to fight back... Cryptomnesia is even a blatant Expy of the Technical Boy.
