YMMV / Guardian: The Lonely and Great God

Go To

  • Angel Unaware: Or rather, God Unaware. Yoo Deok-hwa is revealed to be possessed by the White Butterfly after lots of hinting throughout the show. The White Butterfly is often referred to by the fandom in terms fitting for a singular Christian-style God, but given the presence of Korean fate goddess Samshin, many viewers theorize he's the traditional Korean Elder Wol-ha. Elder Wol-ha is a god of marriage and coupling, which would make more sense symbolically as well as tie more closely to the story itself.
  • Broken Base: Some fans ship Kim Shin and Eun Tak. Others are too uncomfortable about the age difference — especially since Eun Tak is a teenager and Kim Shin is over nine hundred. Then there are the fans who don't like the age difference between the characters but think it doesn't really matter because Eun Tak's actress is older than her character.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Many fans prefer Kim Shin/Wang Yeo to Kim Shin/Eun Tak or Wang Yeo/Sunny.
  • Ho Yay: Between Kim Shin and Wang Yeo. When Wang Yeo thinks Kim Shin is going to share a room with Eun-tak his reaction is oddly dramatic and almost jealous. Later he tells Kim Shin he loves him — as a joke, but still. Then he asks Kim Shin to send Eun-tak away so he and Kim Shin can be happy together "like we used to be".
  • The Woobie: Life has not been kind to Eun Tak. She lost her mother at the age of 9, she's ostracized by most of her peers at school, and she lives under an abusive aunt who only took her in for the life insurance payout. Things start to look up when she meets Shin, until she learns she's destined to kill him, and that death will come for her if she refuses.
