YMMV / Gabriel Iglesias

Go To

  • Broken Base: In regards to Gabriel's weight loss, some fans are happy to see Gabriel bettering himself for his friends and family, and still are confident in his comedy even as he becomes less "fluffy", meanwhile, there are fans who fear that his weight loss means he'll no longer be the "fluffy comic". To his credit, Gabriel is well aware of this issue and has gone on record multiple times that no matter how much weight he loses, that so much crazy stuff happens in his life that he will never run out of funny stuff to talk about on stage.
  • Crosses the Line Twice:
    • Not one of his jokes, but a joke he recalled during his visit to Saudi Arabia. A random person in the audience meets him, says that he considers himself a comedian, and offers Gabriel a joke: "Two Jews walk into a bar. Not in my country!"
    • As for Iglesias himself, he and Martin pulled a practical joke on fellow comedian G. Reilly by sending up the most racist gift basket they could put together - and adding in a Halloween card with Bedsheet Ghosts on it, with "Welcome to Fresno — The Chamber of Commerce" on the back. Reilly admitted to loving every item included until he spotted the card.
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: During his "Aloha Fluffy" special, Gabriel learns from a Saudi Arabian cab driver that he is quite popular in the region, to the point where he is considered the #2 most popular comedian there (just behind Jeff Dunham, an amusing case of Mexicans Love Speedy Gonzales which Gabriel himself lampshades).
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • When Gabriel's "fluffy" lifestyle caused him Type-2 Diabetes and he was given two years to live, some of his comedy routines, in particular when he would talk about how audience members would constantly bring him chocolate cakes, became a little harder to watch. Even though Gabriel has gotten better through diet and exercise, it's hard not to cringe a little when Gabriel tells his then-girlfriend/now-wife "What? You live by the cake, you die by the cake?!" as that's almost what happened.
    • Some of his old routines about his mom and his Disappeared Dad take on new lights considering his dad came back into the picture and his mom passed away.
    • Gabriel once told a story about him wanting to adopt Frankie for security, but was unwilling to marry his then girlfriend, and joked about it saying "I'll always love him". As of this writing, Gabriel and Frankie's mother are no longer together, but on the bright side, him and Frankie are still Father and Son.
  • It's Popular, Now It Sucks!: While it's hard to blame him for it, due to Gabriel's comedy mostly revolving around humorous things that happen to him in his everyday life, as his popularity and recognizability has grown his comedy has grown less relatable as more of his stories have started to focus around things that have happened to him specifically because he's famous, rather than more relatable everyman stories that happened before or in spite of his fame.
  • Mexicans Love Speedy Gonzales: He confirmed as much about the actual Speedy Gonzales in an August 2021 interview with Stephen Colbert.
I've never seen Speedy as a bad character. He's Mexican and He's fast; where I come from, that's job security.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • In a 2019 benefit performance for the victims of the El Paso Walmart shooting, he admitted that back in 2017, he had a Creator Breakdown that not only took a toll on his mental and physical health, but also resulted in separating from Franky's mother.
    • He goes into more details in his "Stadium Fluffy" show. After a long process, Gabriel gets a message from his ex-girlfriend saying that all necessary paper work have been signed and sent, signifying that they are officially over. It took a while to kick in for Gabriel to realize that as a result, he can't go back to the place he's called home for 15 years, he's separated from his first true love, leading him to break down emotionally in his car. He describes it as the lowest point in his life.
    • Also from "Stadium Fluffy", Gabriel revealed that Frankie has had a difficult time growing up because of Gabriel's stories about him that were embarrassing to him, especially the Deodorant story that actually resulted in him being mocked by his entire school who also watch Gabriel's act. He admitted that he wanted to tell Gabriel for years but never mustered the courage until he was already in his 20s. Gabriel understood his son's position and made it clear to him (and via telling the story during his act, his audience) that he will not be telling any embarrassing stories about Frankie anymore.
  • Values Resonance: Aloha Fluffy has a segment that involves Gabriel going to Saudi Arabia and how he felt bad for judging them after having done standup comedy for them and visiting the prince who hosted the event. Nowadays the motif behind the segment speaks louder than it ever did due to rampant racism towards the Middle East and Mexico since 2016.
