YMMV / Fury (2014)

Go To

  • Broken Base:
    • A weird example. Among the general public, reception to the movie was generally positive but mixed; with World War 2 nerds and historians reception is better but still mixed from technical inaccuracies...but among people who have or are serving in the military as armored vehicle crew, this was the best movie of 2014 and they would hear no word against it. "Best job I ever had" reached memetic status among actively serving US tank crews in days after this movie came out.
    • The final battle where the Fury crew take on a 300 SS Nazi battalion by themselves is either a Moment of Awesome, or Hollywood bullshit that completely breaks the realistic immersion that had people invested throughout the movie.
  • Do Not Do This Cool Thing: Just because you're not a standard infantry soldier does not exclude you from the horror of war. In fact, the film argues that being a tanker can be worse than being a standard foot soldier. On the other hand, that doesn't stop actual military tank crews from lavishing praise upon the movie, as seen in the above trope.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Tank commander Binkowski only has about ten minutes of screen time and doesn't even get an on-screen death, but fans enjoy his wry sense of humor, his competence, and how his tank is named Murder Inc.
  • Fan-Preferred Cut Content: The deleted scenes. Some critics believe they should have remained as they added more depth to the film.
  • He Really Can Act:
    • For those who were still on the fence about Shia LaBeouf. Here he delivers a sterling, almost unrecognizable performance, acting on equal footing with Brad Pitt.
    • Logan Lerman as Norman. Some had only seen him in young adult/high school dramas, and never in a role as intense as this.
  • Ho Yay: Between Wardaddy and Bible. There is a very tender scene where Bible tends to Wardaddy's wounds, there is long eye contact, and they quote this segment of the Bible: "For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—comes not from the Father but from the world." Even the critics have noticed this, but David Ayer just says that this interpretation is "funny".
  • Hype Backlash: After really good word-of-mouth about it as "good, gritty war movie", it started to be notoriously picked apart by people pointing out various artistic licenses and anachronisms, TV Tropes included, just for the sake of subversion. Eventually the negative fandom became so overwhelming, the word-of-mouth turned into "war movie everyone tries to dissect".
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Some people came just to watch tanks blow shit up, or to watch the debut of a period-correct Tiger I in a feature film.
  • Mondegreen: Bible's catchphrase is 'On the way!' but sounds much more like 'Open wide!'
  • Music to Invade Poland to: The advancing Waffen-SS battalion sighted by Norman is accompanied by an actual marching song of the SS, which probably helped clue Wardaddy in that it is indeed an SS battalion.
  • Narm: The tracer bullets (green and red) seen in the movie are historically accurate. However, For some people, the overuse of CGI could make the battle scenes difficult to be taken seriously due to the thing looking like red blaster shots straight out of Star Wars.
  • Nausea Fuel: When Norman first cleans up the inside of the tank, he spots a big chunk of the last Fury member's face. Norman appropriately responds by running out of the tank and puking.
  • Signature Scene: The confrontation against the Tiger.
  • Spiritual Licensee:
    • Some have called this World of Tanks: The Movie. Helps that Wargaming.net had a special deal selling the exclusive Fury tank and crew in the game itself.
    • Also to Girls und Panzer in the Japanese market, with the anime also adding some extra contents in the Japanese blu-ray and Miho's voice actress lending her voice to one of the female characters.
  • Squick: Fury's first assistant driver has his head removed by shrapnel. Part of his face is still on the controls while Norman cleans it off.
