YMMV / Full Frontal with Samantha Bee

  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • An episode around Christmas 2016 had Sam spend a Christmas dinner with Glenn Beck, in which, while making it clear that they still disagree politically, he stated that he regretted the way he expressed his opinions in the past, and stated that they could co-exist as Friendly Enemies. This mostly stemmed from the fact that around that time, Beck, while a conservative, was a Donald Trump critic almost as much as Sam was. However, Beck would later become a Trump supporter and more or less revert back to the old attitude he claimed to have regretted. While admittedly it can be Hilarious in Hindsight for a Trump supporter, one can't deny that it's still sad that their attempt at civility was ultimately for nothing.
    • One segment in June 2016 had Samantha discover that Charlie Rose had a "secret": That he had a room full of clones of himself. It later turned out that Rose allegedly did have a secret: In November 2017, eight women accused him of sexual misconduct and harassment, leading CBS and PBS to fire him. Sam later stated that when they met to tape the segment, Rose actually greeted her by kissing her in the mouth without her consent "with a hint of tongue", something that Sam had brushed off even during the initial reportings until it was reported on May 2018 that 27 additional women had accused Rose of sexual misconduct. This led the segment on YouTube to be retitled from "Charlie Rose Has A Secret" to "Charlie Rose Absolutely Had A Secret."
    • A perhaps even worse case was in November 2017, when Sam interviewed then-New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman. The piece was very positive on him due to, among other things, his legal battles with Harvey Weinstein regarding Weinstein's sexual abuse scandal, even comparing him with a superhero, "Schneider-Man". In May 2018, Schneiderman faced a scandal of his own: He was accused by four women of domestic abuse, leading him to resign a few hours after the accusations went public. To say that Sam and the show were furious with Schneiderman after the reveal would be an understatement, to the point that on the first episode after the reports they dedicated an entire segment to give him a "fuck you." Like with Charlie Rose, the segment on YouTube was retitled from "Schneider-Man" to "Former AG Tricks Sam Into Thinking He Was Decent." This even extended to a web exclusive Schneiderman interview clip, which ended with a joke where Bee makes fun of his love for jazz by narrating, "Well, we know what his scandal's going to be!" and putting up a fake New York Post headline reading "Sax Addict A.G. Horn-y For Jazz.", which also became extremely cringeworthy in light of his assault allegations. Like the "Schneider-Man" clip, the YouTube clip of this segment was renamed "Never Discuss Anything With Eric Schneiderman."
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: The "Real Black History (Abridged)" segment from February 2019 draws attention to Bayard Rustin, a civil rights activist and contemporary and ally of Martin Luther King Jr., and how he tends to get overlooked when the history of civil rights is told in part because he was openly gay and an outspoken socialist. Someone seems to have taken notice of this, because about two years later, it was announced that a movie about Rustin was being made, produced by Barack and Michelle Obama's production company.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: In the May 30, 2018 episode, Samantha talked at length about the Donald Trump administration deliberately separating children from their families if they were caught crossing illegally, and ended with criticizing Ivanka Trump for failing to be the moderating force she presented herself as. Unfortunately, in doing so, she said, "You know, Ivanka, that's a beautiful photo of you and your child, but let me just say, one mother to another... do something about your dad's immigration practices ya feckless cunt! He listens to you!" Naturally, comparatively few outlets reported on the overarching point, and even let the Incest Subtext that followed shortly after ("Put on something tight and low-cut and tell your father to fuckin' stop it.") slide in favor of focusing on Bee's Country Matters. Bee didn’t apologize for calling Ivanka that, she only apologized for the fact that calling Ivanka that overshadowed the fact that children were put in cages.
