- Cliché Storm: The Post-Climax Confrontation between Kelly and Justin, which includes the following Stock Phrases (in order):
- "We need to talk."
- "I have nothing to say to you."
- "Why are you being like this?"
- "I haven't done anything."
- "[She] told me everything."
- "I meant everything I said."
- "You've been hot and cold."
- "Game over."
- Heartwarming in Hindsight: The line "Ladies and gentlemen, and everyone else here!" has actually aged quite well now that there's a lot more public awareness and acceptance of non-binary people.
- Indecisive Parody: The Cut Song "Brighter Star", in which Justin and Kelly discuss their first date together with their respective groups of friends, appears to be this movie's attempt to replicate "Summer Nights" from Grease. But there are some crucial differences:
- Sandy and Danny offer very specific details of their romance; both Justin and Kelly are very vague about what happened.
- Sandy and Danny provide very different perspectives on their romance, hers emotional and his physical; neither Justin nor Kelly emphasizes one over the other, so their accounts are basically the same.
- The Pink Ladies and the T-Birds come away with completely different assumptions, both of which have a grain of truth; Justin and Kelly's friends both assume they "hooked up", and none discover that the farthest the two went was shaking hands.
- Sandy and Danny both assume their romance was just a summer fling; Justin and Kelly use the song to rhapsodize about how they've found love and love is awesome.
- Retroactive Recognition:
- Anika Noni Rose, who would go on to play Lorrell and Tiana, was Kaya in this film.
- Brian Dietzen, who would play Jimmy Palmer the following year, played Eddie, one of Justin's friends.
- So Bad, It's Good: Some people who don't loathe the movie have this opinion of it. This includes Golden Raspberry Award founder John Wilson, who describes From Justin to Kelly in his book as "stupid when it means to be clever, garishly clubfooted when it wants to be graceful, and bearing no resemblance to anything a modern teenager would be caught dead watching".
- Special Effect Failure: The film is riddled with costume and scene continuity errors and at one point the entire set crew can be seen.
- Strangled by the Red String: Justin and Kelly have almost no real chemistry, to the point where it seems like they don't even want to touch one another, in spite of the fact that they had begun dating in real life while filming.
- Strawman Has a Point: Carlos accuses Kaya of just wanting to just use him for a quick fling before she goes home and forgets him. The sentiment isn't entirely unfounded as it's not explained how any of the couples plan to stay together despite living half a country away from each other.
- Took the Bad Film Seriously: Todd in the Shadows points out in his review that Jason Yribar, who played Carlos, seemed "too real" to be in the movie. Justin Guarini also put in a lot of effort to as well since his celebrity career depended on this movie's success in sharp contrast to Kelly Clarkson who very much didn't want to be in the film and whose discomfort is clear throughout.
- WTH, Costuming Department?: When she finally decides to "unclench" and start partying, Kelly dons a skirt made of men's ties. She has some pretty impressive Anime Hair in a scene shortly before this.
