YMMV / Frog and Toad

Go To

  • Accidental Aesop: In "Spring", Frog manages to wake Toad up from hibernation and get him to go outside with him thanks to ripping up his calendar and lying to him that it's May (even though the story is set in April). While the story's intended moral is to stop sleeping all the time and to get out of the house every once in a while, given Frog's actions and motivations, it's not hard to also interpret the message as being that sometimes you have to lie to get what you want.
  • Awesome Music: The ending theme to the Apple TV+ adaptation, sung by Robert Francis.
  • Funny Moments: In "The Dream", while it's supposed to be dramatic and sad because every impressive thing Toad does on the stage that Frog can't makes him shrink more and more, Toad eventually realizing this and cutting off the announcer by yelling out a Big "SHUT UP!" to the announcer would instantly make a child laugh with both the shock of the moment as well as illustration of Toad's angry face while shaking his fist.
  • Ho Yay: The books sometimes prompt conservative controversy due to interpretations of the duo as a gay couple. According to a piece in the New Yorker about Arnold Lobel, this might gain some steam: Lobel came out to his family, and his daughter speculated that the act of writing Frog and Toad was a subtle way for him to begin exiting the closet.
  • Memetic Mutation: "We must stop eating!" cried Toad as he ate another.Explanation
    • From the same book:
Frog: "There. The cookies are in the box. Now we can't eat any."
Toad: "But we can open the box."
      Frog: "That is true."
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The illustration of Toad's Imagine Spot in "Christmas", where he imagines Frog being eaten by a ferocious animal.
    • The Old Dark Frog in "Shivers" is genuinely scary, especially for the younger children the stories are aimed at.
  • Paranoia Fuel: "Toad's Dream", or whatever it's called. Toad dreams about losing his one and only friend, and he is now truly alone.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel: The books and the animated adaptations are so cozy to read/watch, as they focus on the heartwarming friendship between Frog and Toad.
