YMMV / For Love Of Magic

Go To

  • Audience-Alienating Premise: Harry in this story grows into a sociopathic racist. A completely admitted in-story description that can put many readers off the story.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Harry is perfectly content with trading a love potion with a skin walker as the price for learning how to skin walk from the latter, despite nothing good can come out of someone using a rape drug. Predictably, the skin walker gets a mundane woman, whom he had been stalking, this way, and later has children with her.
    • The author tries to hand-wave Harry's direct abiding of this crime by stating that the woman eventually came to love her rapist, and trying to fix the situation would be family-unfriendly.
  • Spiritual Successor: Can be thought to be one to Partially Kissed Hero, being a fic with a sociopathic Harry who is racist against Muslims among others, attracts women to him like flies, has the masquerade be shattered wide open, potentially interesting ideas sprinkled in between all of the above, and in which the fics spend a lot of time tearing into aspects of the Harry Potter community (though while the former goes after canon the latter goes after fanon).
  • What an Idiot!:
    • Penelope Clearwater's future career is ruined by Lucius Malfoy because she once gave his son detention. After learning what happened, Penelope goes to her boyfriend Percy Weasley and tells him.
You'd Expect: Percy to agree that's a horribly petty thing to do and maybe see if his father could get her a job working in his office.
Instead: Percy tells Penelope that she should be more careful about who she assigned detentions to.
The Result: Penelope immediately dumps him.
    • Several years later, a massive attack on London has irreparably broken the Statute of Secrecy due to several giants, an army of inferi, and Voldemort himself. After the fighting is over, ICW Obliviators apparate in.
You'd Expect: Them to find out what's going on before doing anything.
Instead: They start memory charming every single muggle they can find without any idea of the situation.
The Result: Not only do they erase all the good will the aurors had built up by working with the muggle police, several of them are killed when said police open fire on what appears to be a group of nutjobs threatening people with sticks.
Even Worse: The Obliviators completely ruin any chance the Ministry of Magic had for controlling the reveal of magic to the muggle world. If not for Harry being encouraged to step in and give a series of interviews, any lunatic could have released whatever information they wanted to cause untold chaos.
