YMMV / Final Fantasy: Legend of the Crystals

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement: At the time it was released in the US, most fans didn't even know there was a Final Fantasy V, let alone that the OVA was a sequel to it.
  • Complete Monster: Ra Devil is a malevolent cyborg who seeks to become Deathgyunos, the God of Oblivion. He stole Cid Previa's brain from his grave before murdering Cid's young grandson Mid. He then kept the brain alive and in torment to forcibly extract the knowledge of the elemental crystals that stabilize the world. Returning to Planet R two hundreds years later, Ra Devil steals the crystals, dooming the world to destruction. Setting sight on the Wind Crystal, he launches raids on Rouge Island and later the city of Tycoon. He then abducts the heroine Linaly, whose body hosts the the Wind Crystal and uses her as a battery to drain the energy of the universe and complete his transformation. After the heroes interrupts the process, Ra Devil fights them back and sadistically electrocutes Prettz and Rouge in front of their friends.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: The perverted humor. Rouge's pirates are all dressed in Stripperific leather outfits... and the alarm bell in their base are the breasts on a statue. Linaly's panty shots become a plot point, and there's even a track on the OST called "Linaly the Firefly."
  • Fanon Discontinuity: Fans who do manage to find and watch it tend to disregard it, either because it's so absurd and drastically different from the original game or because accepting it means that you accept Cid and Mid Previa dying about five minutes after you saved the world in Final Fantasy V. Also, Square was not directly involved in its creation so its canonicity is debatable.
  • Genius Bonus: The setting of the game is in the age of the Kari Yuga, named after one of the four ages in Hinduism.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Mid and Cid finally being able to rest in peace, reuniting with the spirits of the other Final Fantasy V heroes as they pass on.
  • Narm: All attempts to take the story seriously end the moment Linaly's butt starts glowing.
  • Narm Charm: Like its source, this story is absolutely over-the-top ridiculous with a cast of Large Hams, so you can't help but laugh.
  • Superlative Dubbing: One of the most common praises hailed upon this anime, even to its detractors, is its stellar English dub. It features a cast made entirely of Tenchi Muyo! alumni (Matt "Tenchi" Miller plays Prettz and Sherry "Sasami" Lynn plays Linaly, among others), voice direction by Jack Fletcher (Kiki's Delivery Service, Castle in the Sky, and many of the voiced Final Fantasy titles), and a surprisingly excellent English script from R.D. Makepeace, whose only notable dub writing role aside from this is the Golgo 13: Queen Bee OVA.
