YMMV / Filthy Frank

Go To

  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment:
    • The moment in "Jungle Boy" where Pink Guy is incoherently screaming.
    • The guy who shows up at Frank's door just to barf up a yellow substance.
  • Broken Base: The fan made reboot, mostly between people happy to see some form of continuation of the show, vs people who think the new Frank is just retreading old ground by copying a style of humor even Joji thought was getting stale, not helped that the original series is so highly regarded by internet denizens that the reboot doesn't compare. Though, as of recently, people are starting to get warmed up to it by the looks of his latest videos.
  • Creator Worship: Joji, so much so. Although even he gets tired of the immense godhood the fandom holds him on, especially when it comes to his non-FF stuff.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: The entire nature of the show.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Dade turned out to be extremely popular with the fandom (despite only having two appearances) and there are a lot of theories about his status and power level with the Frankverse.
    • Safari Man is also well liked, even Frank himself is surprised about it and lampshades it one video.
  • Fountain of Memes: A never-ending fountain that blossoms not only on Youtube but on Frank's social media outlets. Accentuated by the fact that Frank's basically the meme lord and encourages memes ten-fold with his videos.
  • Genius Bonus: HOOD RICH samples a bit from Elfen Lied's opening.
    • In "I'M A LEMON," Lemon is seen lying down on a bed hitting himself while yelling "TWENTY ONE! TWENTY ONE! TWENTY ONE!" This, combined with the insane mess that is the brief video, suggests that this Madness Mantra is a reference to Down's Syndrome, which is caused by - what else - three copies of chromosome 21.
  • Growing the Beard: "I HATE STUPID GIRLS". After several videos of what appears to be a teenager ranting about his life, this is the one where Frank finally slips into his role as the growling madman we know and "love". The video quality and editing also grows better.
    • "ADELE IS FAT" saw the introduction of Frank's trademark hairdo, and it was also the point where Frank began using his iconic guttural voice all the time. Prior to this episode, Frank had another more regular voice, and he started using his growling voice on occasion.
    • When it comes to Pink Guy's rapping, his ramen rap seemed to be his definitive turning point.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • The many scenes with Pink Guy having seizures become rather uncomfortable to watch when we learn George has a medical condition that he's had since youth that causes seizures.
      • Also, there's a line in Pink Guy's "Big Mama" rap that states, "And when I'm not on my pill / my brain deteriorates and I go insane."
    • Joji's enthusiasm about revealing himself to the fandom and his positivity to the Joji music becomes harder to stomach when he cut himself away from the fandom, dropped the Joji album, and showed annoyance at the high demand of him to return.
      • A bit of adding to the "FILTHY FRANK EXPOSES HIMSELF" video, Joji himself discusses his health condition that he has and while stressing it isn't serious, it is a bit more eerie considering it was one of the factors that lead to him ending the series. Not helped when Frank furiously asks Joji if he wants him to quit, only for Joji to respond with a surprised "No, No! Of course not, I never want you guys to quit!"...which is exactly what Joji would later on due because of said health reasons and his eventual disillusionment with the series (and Youtube's eventual tendencies of screwing content creators that had certain content not in their algorithm not helping the channel either).
    • "Nickelodeon Girls" describes that rough sex with singer Ariana Grande will "put her in a coma" and "put her in a coffin." Consider the fact that this was before the attack on her Manchester concert....
      • It also doesn't help that Pink Guy coughs up blood on posters of various Nickelodeon actresses throughout the video.
    • Frank's trademark grovelly voice becomes harder to listen to when Joji revealed one of his health issues was throat tissue damage, meaning said voice may have done damage to him in the long run. Even worse, at one point Joji denied that the voice hurt his throat.
    • Frank's joke about "Malaysian Airlines" marijuana ("You're fucking gone!") was practically made with this in mind, considering the MH370 disappearance as well as the MH17 crash.
    • A certain line in the WHY DRONES SUCK video hits really close after reading the announcement of Joji retiring the show.
Filthy Frank: We're gonna end this- end this early. I don't like this anymore.
  • He Really Can Act: Shaman in WORST ANIMAL RIGHTS ACTIVIST. Holy hell.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: In "Phone Call To Sesame Street" (posted in 2011) Frank says, "the only reason I watch your show is because you guys are a bunch of dysfunctional retards". Now, with looking at the current version of the show, with a bunch of dysfunctional, ambiguous disorder-bearing madmen...
  • Jerkass Woobie: The titular Frank himself may qualify. While he's an angsty, edgy teenager, his life is implied to be a mess. He got depressed and tried to kill himself, was waterboarded and raped during an ice bucket challenge, and suffers from explosive diarrhea.
  • Misaimed Fandom: Filthy Frank, the character, is supposed to be an exaggerated portrayal of an incredibly crass and tasteless "edgelord", constantly spewing out politically-incorrect observations and tons of shock humor. Unfortunately, a majority of his fanbase thinks Joji is playing everything straight, rather than it being a character, and eat everything up without seeing the irony. Joji, himself, recognizes that Filthy Frank's fanbase is the exact type of group of people he's trying to parody, which may contribute to why he wants to distance himself from the persona.
  • More Popular Replacement: Despite being a blatant impersonator of Frank, Fake Frank is more popular for having a wider personality than the original.
  • Narm: Acording to George, "Tribute to Ronald" was supposed to be a serious song and even a bit of a Tear Jerker, but it ultimately came off as amusing considering he was rapping about, y'know, McDonald's.
  • Nausea Fuel: A lot of the humor of the show. See here.
  • Retroactive Recognition: A majority of the comments on the Harlem Shake video are from people in genuine shock that George was the one who started the craze.
  • Sacred Cow:
    • Speaking negatively about the series will get you flamed to death, pretty much anywhere.
    • Joji is highly regarded by people as a genius of satire comedy, as well as his own music (whether the comedy of Pink Guy to the Joji stuff), although Joji himself doesn't understand and is actually pretty uncomfortable with it.
    • Related to the two above, when a few newer fans of Joji found out about his past as Filthy Frank, they tried to cancel him on Twitter. The dormant fanbase all rose to defend Filthy Frank and Joji at lightning speeds.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel:
    • The beat to "Tribute to Ronald" is blissful on its own, but the breakdown at the end of the song is transcendental.
    "They don't understand..."
    • Meta-example: there is one surviving song from Joji's highly-anticipated album called "Medicine" that is considered this: slow beat, relaxing rhythm, and overall just tranquil.
    • The rice fields scene from CHIN CHIN SACRIFICE 2015 - FRANK'S JOURNEY. Some of the shots are unbelievably beautiful, and the calm music playing in the background really fits with the imagery.
    • The outro of "Teriyaki God", which just sounds like the feeling of Ascend to a Higher Plane of Existence put into music form, played over the visuals of Pink Guy dying(?) as a result of eating his teriyaki.
  • The Woobie: Frank in the Christmas special. Not only does he have Dade die, but it's because he failed to find the antidote in time.
