YMMV / Dumb and Dumber To

Go To

  • Contested Sequel: Among fans of the original. Some fans view the film as a disappointment that relies too much on potty humor, while other fans praised the comedic chemistry between Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels and consider the film a worthy sequel to the original (and the Farrely Brothers' best film since There's Something About Mary). If nothing else, people seem to agree that the film is far, far worthier than Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: In Harry's fantasy of being a cool dad, he imagines his daughter when she first gets her period. He hands her a wine bottle cork.

    • How about Lloyd pretending to be a catatonic mental institution patient for the past two decades just so he could play a joke on Harry?
      • Which included partial lobotomy and shock therapy. Jeez...
    • There's also Harry putting on a device that allows people to see into his mind. We see a memory of him as a teenager in his room putting peanut butter on his balls and then calling a dog into his room, and you can figure out the rest.
  • "Funny Aneurysm" Moment: In Lloyd's fantasy of dating Penny, he envisions Harry being married to Mama June. This wound up pretty ill-timed given the controversy surrounding her boyfriend's child molestation allegations.
  • Idiot Plot: The entire film. Excused, because we are dealing with two really stupid guys here. The kicker is that Harry never needed a kidney; he was only getting back at Lloyd for the mental institution joke. Which means that the plot was all for nothing.

  • Moral Event Horizon: Adele not only crosses it when she poisons her husband to gain his wealth, but when she tries to shoot Penny at the climax and remorselessly shoots Harry when he takes the bullet for Penny.
  • Nausea Fuel: If you saw the first one, this is not much of a surprise. If anything, this movie's even worse.
    • For those who are sensitive to Jabba Table Manners, Lloyd eating that hot dog is incredibly disgusting.
  • Squick: The scene in the nursing home where Lloyd is tricked into fingering an old lady. Also, the scene at the beginning where Harry tries to yank out his catheter and has to call in the nearby gardeners to help him.
    • Plus, their trick at the convention to get fresh beers when they want some and think they can't afford them because the bartender says they're "gratis", ie. free. It involves their fingers and their buttcracks.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Bill Murray and Jim Carrey are comedy legends who finally get to appear in a movie together. Instead, Bill has a cameo.
  • The Un-Twist: Subverted. Many of course were led to believe that Penny looking and especially, behaving the way she does is obviously Lloyd's daughter and not Harry's. However The Reveal shows she's actually the daughter of Harry and Lloyd's late-friend Pete Stainer a.k.a. "Pee Stain" as a result of a one night stand with Fraida.
  • We're Still Relevant, Dammit!:

    • A great deal of fans of the original film have this opinion of the sequel itself, that the jokes just come across as forced, awkward, and a bit sad with the older cast.
    • The Farrelly Brothers try to do a spoof of Breaking Bad, which just comes off as horribly awkward. The show had also been over a year before the film's release.
