YMMV / DuckTales (2017) S3E8 "The Phantom and the Sorceress!"

Go To

  • Catharsis Factor: Gladstone finally gets what he deserves after losing his luck.
  • Character Rerailment: For those who didn’t like the Blot’s characterization in Epic Mickey and House of Mouse, this episode recaptured some of his comics characterization and gives him a sympathetic backstory.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: Many fans felt that the Phantom Blot wasn't really doing anything wrong in this episode, since his hatred of Magica is completely justified. This is forgetting the fact he nearly stranded Scrooge and the boys in Goathul because of his hatred of any magic and nearly killed Lena, whose only crime is that she is Magica's family (and Magica doesn't even like her that much).
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Within a day of the episode's airing, the Phantom Blot saw a ton of fan art and calls for him to get a redemption arc.
  • Fanfic Fuel:
    • Scrooge and the boys' adventure in Goathul.
    • The previous battles between Magica and the Phantom Blot.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Several Magicstone shippers were drawn to this episode the minute it was revealed that Gladstone and Magica would be interacting with each other for the first time in the show.
  • Memetic Mutation: Webby is a Parselmouth.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Magica had crossed this years before by destroying a village simply because she got bored of the villagers offering her gifts in exchange of sparing them.
  • Rooting for the Empire: A number of fans have rooted for the Phantom Blot to win against Magica, given that she destroyed his home village in the past.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character:
    • Della shows up at the beginning of the episode just to tell Scrooge about the portal, then disappears from the episode. Her tagging along with the girls would have created some interesting character dynamics, as well as let her interact with Magica and Gladstone for the first time on screen.
    • Several fans were disappointed that Donald didn't appear in this episode like the promos implied (it was actually just Gladstone transformed into him), largely because it would've been interesting to see him interact with Team Magic (considering he has limited to no interactions with its members) and react to Gladstone losing his luck.
    • Some Blot fans have bemoaned the loss of his Trap Master qualities and over-reliance on the Marvel-esque gauntlet device, along with a feeling he and the talents of Giancarlo Esposito were underused within his own episode in general.
  • Unnecessary Makeover: Many fans felt this way about Lena's magic-empowered outfit, whether because they didn't like how it looked or didn't mind it, but preferred her old design. Word of God has confirmed that she will switch between this outfit and her normal one. Also, Frank Angones's response to fans complaining about the outfit was to say it made him want to put every character in it, even Launchpad.
