    A-D
  • Accidental Aesop:
    • Some fans joke about this in the light of Dream's January 2022 lore video, where his character kills off Vikk and Lazar — if you are "part of the roleplay", you should expect to participate in the plot or at least have a decent connection to it, or risk getting killed off brutally and anti-climatically by the resident villain.
    • In the livestream where Eryn sought out Eret to learn more about the history of the SMP, most of the historical facts revealed were relatively accurate... except for one glaring detail: the buttons scattered over Pogtopia weren't placed by Wilbur while he was spiralling, they were put in by Fundy, as a prankhe put it on YouTube and everything. While whether YouTube is canon or not is still unknown, just remember that some of the knowledge in the history books are compiled by assumptions and may not necessarily reflect historical fact, even when they're written by the most dedicated historians.
  • Accidental Innuendo: Quackity's livestream VOD "Quackity Does George Lore" becomes slightly more awkward when it's revealed in the stream that c!George's full name apparently really is George Lore.
  • Actor Shipping: A strange variant. Since the line between character and content creator is a bit blurry, most of the ship content can be interpreted this way, though many artists who create shipping content make it clear that it's about the characters, not the content creators. While writing ship fic about the characters is generally considered fine*, writing ship fic about the content creators is considered a bit more of a moral grey area, and writing ship fic about creators who are uncomfortable with people doing that, under the age of 18, or both, is largely considered taboo.
  • Alternate Aesop Interpretation:
  • Alternate Self Shipping: Some fans give Wilbur and Ghostbur this treatment. It's apparently supported by Wilbur the content creator claiming that he would fuck his character on the SMP.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Due to the skewed perspectives of each of the characters, this is bound to occur. See here for more details.
  • Applicability: Some fans who are burnt-out gifted kids resonate with Wilbur's storyline, with his spiral into depression (and eventually suicide) being comparable to their own experiences, especially in relation to perfectionism and a fear of failure.
  • Archive Panic: The total amount of Dream SMP content in terms of Twitch streams is over 15,000 watch hours and counting.
  • Ass Pull: The reveal that the Final Disc War had been staged, and that Dream's plan was always to go to prison. Not only does it punch about a thousand plot holes in a story that, up until that point, barely had anynote , but it also takes away the catharsis at seeing Tommy and Tubbo win for once, after a full season of Tommy being abused by Dream and forced to go into hiding after escaping, Tubbo being overworked and manipulated by Dream posing as his friend, and both of them being forced to watch as their home was reduced to slag.
  • Badass Decay: According to her critics, Niki qualifies as this. In Season 1, she was a well-respected Silk Hiding Steel-type character who helped lead a rebellion against a tyrannical dictator, but by the Doomsday War in Season 2, she had slipped and started to spiral, even helping to aid the destruction of the nation she loved. While she could have healed and reconnected with her former friends, Niki then decided heal by joining the Syndicate, made up of those who destroy her beloved L'Manburg for the final time; and she eventually aided them in breaking Dream out of prison, whom she used to hate and even helped to put behind bars, which made it all seem like her feelings towards Dream and her values altogether did a 180 in the course of months and her former fire to be reduced to ashes. It's argued that her unaddressed grief and desire for recognition by others influenced her to make these decisions, but it's still a highly contentious topic in the fandom.
  • Base-Breaking Character:
    • While the permanent members are generally well-liked, several of the guests are significantly more divisive. Of note are Pokimane (due to her past history of copyright abuse and attacking sponsors) and KSI (due to past usage of certain derogatory words and being significantly more vulgar than even the most inappropriate members of the SMP).
    • Additionally, some characters within the SMP, such as character Dream, have created significant divisiveness within the fandom based on opposing interpretation and appreciation of his character.
    • In particular, Technoblade as a character arouses many mixed opinions. Some people think his constant wisecracking is funny and endearing, and that he's incredibly badass with his epic speeches and combat prowess. Others think that he's way too overpowered, hate that the narrative seems to constantly reward (or at least refuse to punish) him for genuinely abhorrent behavior that other characters would never get away with (e.g. Doomsday), and feel like his refusal to take anything seriously ruins the tension of otherwise really emotionally impactful scenes (i.e. the initial reunion of Tommy and Tubbo post-exile).
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment:
    • After a couple of streams in the SMP heavy with roleplay and drama, almost everyone abandons the plot for a day to hunt for a $10,000 Taco Bell gift card hidden by MrBeast.
    • Similarly, the Dreamon hunt, which takes place after some of the most drama-heavy parts of the L'Manburg Civil War.
    • In the middle of Tommy's exile and the Butcher Army's unfolding plot to assassinate Dream, multiple people from different factions of the SMP (do note that many of these people want each other dead) unite peacefully so that they can attend a Sex-Ed Class, hosted by none other than KSI.
    • KSI's second visit to the SMP also counts as this, as it involves Dream breaking out of prison by teleporting, and then giving him creative mode and messing around with him, which one of Philza's donations lampshades.
rnelody: They really just ran in, fucked up your lawn, yelled a bunch of swear words, broke out a convicted felon, then left.
  • Broken Base:
    • Though the acting of the players involved in the lore is very well done, there are certain moments or streams that can be very uncomfortable for the audience to watch. This is most evident in Tommy's exile arc, as Dream's manipulation of Tommy is so disturbingly realistic that a good portion of viewers who have gone through a similar experience reported having to stop watching due to its upsetting nature. At one point Tommy rejects almost all acts of kindness from anyone other than Dream under the pretense of pity or clout, which some viewers don't like.
    • The Three Lives System has been a big point of contention within the fandom. Some see it as a useful way to forward the story and put meaning to death, while some see it as a restriction and an easy way to create plot holes. Not to mention that some deaths that have previously been considered canon are later retconned, such as George's assassination, Sapnap's death at the Battle of the Lake, and even one of Schlatt's deaths, depending on the writer.
    • The morality behind the creation of L'Manburg and even the faction itself is heavily disputed in the fandom. Anti-L'Manburg fans accuse the country of many unsavory things, with being built on the basis of selling "drugs" (read: potions) out of a caravan being one of the tamest accusations. On the other hand, L'Manburg-sympathetic fans argue that the country was built in response to Police Brutality and violencenote , and the part about the drugs was not meant to be serious to begin with. And just to add the fuel to the fire, the SMP is filled to the brim with Unreliable Narrators and many VODs have been lost to time, leading to the spread of a lot of misinformation both in- and out-of-universe.
  • Captain Obvious Reveal: Techno betraying Pogtopia was predicted from the very beginning. How it happened, however, was not, and in focusing solely on the obvious twist, the audience failed to see another one (Wilbur going back to his plan of blowing up L'Manburg) hiding right behind it. It's also subverted in that Wilbur was the traitor Dream spoke of, not Techno like so many had predicted. Techno was a traitor, but it was outside of Dream's knowledge.
  • Catharsis Factor:
    • During one stream on the SMP, Tommy finds himself forced to go through a sadistic game run by Quackity, who was aided by Tubbo, in order to save his pet cow Henry. When he's led to believe that Tubbo just killed Henry (well, a cow that represented Henry and whether he would live or die), Tommy proceeds to finally snap, going berserk even as Quackity tries to dissuade him by claiming Henry was never in any danger, and proceeds to murder Tubbo many times before finally hunting down Quackity to give him the beatdown of his life. Considering how much of a Card-Carrying Villain Quackity was acting like at the moment, seeing him finally get thrashed by a vengeful Tommy is nothing short of satisfying, as is Tommy repeatedly killing Tubbo for his helping Quackity. What makes this even cooler is that Tommy, who is normally considered not as good at PVP among the other SMP players, completely curb-stomps Quackity.
    • Jschlatt getting killed by Technoblade in the process of trying to get Tubbo executed (even if Techno wasn't aiming for him), then getting killed by Techno again when he respawns in the middle of the crossfire. Sure, it was part of one of the most horrific massacres in Dream SMP history, but you can't say Jschlatt didn't have it coming.
    • For some Quackity enthusiasts, him finally snapping, killing Schlatt and defecting to Pogtopia was met with cheers, especially after seeing the sheer amount of abuse heaped onto him while part of the Manburg cabinet.
    • After the months of hell that Dream put Tommy through, including exile, isolation, psychological torture, turning his friends against him, destroying his items, destroying his country, holding his discs over his head, forcing him into a duel, holding his best friend hostage, kidnapping him, then trying to lock him up in prison and kill his best friend right in front of him, Tommy finally gains the upper hand. He forces Dream to give him all of his tools, armor and weapons, using the same line Dream would always use for him in exile ("Put your armor in the hole"). Dream starts trying to bluff his way out, insisting Tommy wouldn't kill him because they're such good friends. Tommy then pulls out the Axe of Peace and proceeds to beat Dream to death twice, fully intending on killing him a third time. When Dream tells him in desperation that he has a way to revive people, Tommy instead takes Sam's suggestion to have Dream locked up in the same prison he was going to use for Tommy. Tommy then boxes Dream in with obsidian and climbs on top of the box, tells everyone present exactly what Dream had been doing, and gives everyone their items back. Finally, Tommy and Tubbo scream "SUCK IT, GREEN BOY!" in Dream's face, echoing Wilbur's words at the end of the L'Manburg Revolution, just to really drive the point home.
    • After the whole event regarding Dream killing Tommy and reviving him, Quackity did... something to Dream. The blood on his clothes implies it involved torture, but with everything that Dream has done to Tommy and everyone else in L'Manburg, some viewers felt it was well deserved.
    • For viewers that were fans of L'Manburg, Technoblade being imprisoned in Pandora's Vault after being lured in by Quackity and Sam are seen by some to be Techno finally getting his comeuppance after burning L'Manburg to the ground in the Doomsday War.
  • Common Knowledge:
    • While it was revealed near the end of his festival stream that Technoblade had a button in his inventory, it is not the buttonnote  that Tommy and Niki (and a good portion of the viewerbase) assumed it to be. It was actually the button for the dunk tank at the festival itself; Techno accidentally removed it while using his water bucket to pull off jumps with his Riptide trident.
    • The claim that Quackity was denied entry to L'Manburg for being non-European isn't actually canon — he was initially denied citizenship with that being one of the reasons, but Wilbur did say he'd give Quackity a visa. However, this belief is so prevalent in the fandom that even Quackity the content creator thought it was the case. This was only brought to light because Quackity the content creator asked for the clip where it happened in the week leading up to his November 27th lore stream, and as it turns out, the entire misunderstanding was based on one of Tommy's assumptions that everyone else just ran with. In the fourth "Las Nevadas" stream, the flashback cut referencing this 'fact' ends up being a clip of Tommy's assumption-quotation.
  • Continuity Lockout: Considering the Archive Panic of the Dream SMP in itself, it can be very difficult for newcomers to the fandom to catch up on the series lore. Many carrds, Google Documents and YouTube channels have been dedicated to listing and compiling the lore of the series, whether it be clips or VOD playlists.note  Even Dream himself acknowledges this phenomenon in the comments section of his first lore video in 2022, which fans translate roughly as, "Good luck, newcomers! You're on your own for this one!":
DreamXD*: If you have no idea what this is about, feel free to ignore it! Or check out other videos on Youtube about the Dream SMP story and catch up!
  • Crosses the Line Twice: There have been so many instances that it has been relegated to its own page.
  • Crossover Ship: Quackity has been jokingly shipped with Etho from Hermitcraft as a result of the MCYTblr Sexyman bracket, as if there weren't already enough Quackity ships based in the DSMP canon. During Round 4 of the bracket, the 'Ethogirls' proposed an alliance with 'Quackblr' so that they vote for each other's beloved creator-characters in the polls; somewhere along the way, it snowballed into jokes that the two communities were in gay love with each other, and cue the Crack Pairing.
  • Death of the Author:
    • Whilst Wilbur confirmed that he had sex with an actual salmon (which led to Fundy's birth) and Philza had sex with an actual Samsung Refrigerator (which led to Wilbur's birth), a lot of the fanbase ignored this portion of the family tree, interpreting the salmon (named Sally) as a shapeshifter, and the fridge as an ice queen, or if applicable, Mumza as the goddess of death. Since then, however, Wilbur the content creator has become more open to the idea of Sally being a shapeshifter due to its prominence in fanon and how it would make more sense in canon.
    • Although Sapnap has confirmed that his character is human, a lot of the fandom has elected to ignore this in favour of the headcanon that his character is a blaze or demon hybrid, which explains his claim of being "born in fire". It doesn't help that Sapnap later claimed on Tina's first livestream on the server that he was born in the Nether... nor that Eryn, canonically a Human-Demon Hybrid, reiterated the quote that he was "born in fire".
    • Several days after Wilbur's revival, Wilbur the content creator described how Ghostbur was doing in the Afterlife, which is to say, not well at all. Many fans have decided to ignore this, instead believing that Ghostbur rode the train past "Jubilee Hell" and into a much more pleasant Afterlife than what his living counterpart experienced in death, such as being Together in Death with the previous incarnations of his pet sheep, friend, meeting up with Mexican Dream and befriending him, or ending up in the Origins SMP.
  • Designated Hero: Technoblade is considered to be this by fans who are critical of him. According to them, this is because the narrative seems to constantly reward (or at least refuse to punish) him for genuinely abhorrent behavior that other characters would never get away with (e.g. Doomsday, where Techno got away with minimal losses while L'Manburg got nuked to a crater in the ground, leaving several people homeless, historical records destroyed, and many pets dead), and his most glaring flaws* are usually glossed over in the story. What probably doesn't help is that Techno the content creator himself, as indicated by some of his Discord messages, expresses similar views on the plot to his character, dashing many of those fans' hopes that Techno the character's behaviour is deliberately played out to be villainous-leaning. However, much of the fan criticism towards his character has slowed to a halt after his content creator's passing out of respect for the man behind the screen, regardless of how said creator portrayed his character.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience:
    • While very few of the characters have canonically confirmed neurodivergent conditions and/or psychiatric disorders, content creators with diagnosed disorders often play their characters in ways that are impacted by those disorders, hence rousing fan speculation that their characters may also have these disorders and inverting Disabled Character, Disabled Actor:
      • Dream has shown several symptoms of ADHD like his content creator counterpart, such as hyperfixation, emotional impulsivity, struggling to articulate words, and fidgeting.
      • Techno claims to have a bad attention span when listing his flaws during the Manburg Festival. Considering that the man who plays the character had ADHD in real life, this may point to his character having the disorder as well.
    • Aside from his allegedly canonical PTSD from his Dark and Troubled Past, as of Season 3, several more of c!Quackity's traits can point towards him having borderline personality disorder (BPD), which has a strong link to childhood trauma and is sometimes comorbid with PTSD. These traits include an extreme fear of abandonment and frantic attempts to avoid it (real or imaginary), a pattern of unstable and intense interpersonal relationships, impulsivity to the point of potentially being self-destructive, an unstable self-image or sense of self, intense anger and outbursts, being The Paranoiac, all-or-nothing thinking, etc.
    • Aside from C-PTSD, according to various Twitter-based fans, c!Tommy also shows some symptoms that could indicate ADHD, such as a very short attention span, a non-existent brain-mouth filter, extreme emotional responses for both positive and negative emotions, and difficulty articulating himself, especially in stressful situations.
    • Wilbur's content creator counterpart has stated in a Reddit comment that his character "was suffering from intense paranoia and delusions". Based on this piece of Word of God, some fans have suggested that c!Wilbur has some form of psychosis alongside semi-canonical depression.
    • Many fans describe Slimecicle's character as being autistic-coded, due to his unawareness of social cues and norms, apparent stimming (particularly vocal stimming), and literal-mindedness. While it's explained in-universe by him being a slime, this doesn't stop autistic fans from relating to him. Additionally, some fans read his attempts at passing for human as analogous to autistic masking, a phenomenon in which autistic people suppress their symptoms in order to pass for an allistic person.
  • Draco in Leather Pants: Due to the content creators' fanbases of varying sizes (see more about content creator bias in the Unpopular Popular Character entry) and interpretations, as well as the multi-perspective nature of the SMP, several of the SMP characters are frequently seen in this way.
    • Dream is regarded by some parts of the fandom to be this, which is especially rallied on by his content creator counterpart's large fanbase. The extremely vocal so-called "c!Dream apologists" claim that he is morally grey, Forced into Evil (or Slowly Slipping Into Evil at best), and had good, well-intentioned reason for doing everything he did, whereas some just want Dream go through some kind of redemption arc. Many fans who are unsympathetic towards Dream (as a character) point out his crimes included and were not limited to child abuse, murder, and plotting the massacre of four L'Manburgians for the "crime" of trying to stand up to his violent Control Freak tendencies through declaring independence. Moreover, many of Dream's apologists do not look upon Tommy or Wilbur fondly, believing them to be the root of Dream's fall into morally dark territory (though there is plenty of canonical evidence to prove otherwise), and look upon Technoblade more fondly. Unsurprisingly, this stance is highly controversial in the fandom due to accusations that include and are not limited to Blaming the Victim, dehumanization, and spread of blatant misinformation.
    • A highly uncommon take interprets Schlatt in this way, claiming that he was justified in having Tubbo executed for treason at the Manburg Festival and was somehow justified in mistreating everyone around him... even though Schlatt was a totalitarian dictator with the mentality of a totalitarian dictator, never expressed remorse for his actions (alive or as a ghost), and his abusive actions still strongly affect his victims to this day canonically. This stance appears to be only slightly less controversial than that of c!Dream apologists, but only because c!Schlatt apologists are much fewer in numbers and thus tend to fly under the radar more. Another minority in the fandom justifies Schlatt's actions with his struggles with substance abuse. Nevertheless, many fans find this a flimsy excuse since what characterized Schlatt in his villainy isn't his addictions and vices, but rather, his abusive actions regardless of whether he's under the influence, which might explain his actions but doesn't actually justify them.
    • A small minority of Wilbur apologists may believe that his mental illness and paranoia justifies his destruction of L'Manburg and him traumatizing others during his spiral in Pogtopia (e.g. his "Let's be the bad guys" speech canonically gives Tommy nightmares). Once again, those that disagree with this point out that though his mental illness and thus-affected thought patterns can explain his more morally dubious actions during this time period, it most certainly doesn't excuse him from them and that he should still be held accountable for those actions, e.g. the duel in 'the Pit' between Techno and Tommy, which Wilbur egged on.
  • Dry Docked Ship: A weird, somewhat downplayed example. In Season 1, it's at least soft-canon that Wilbur is attracted to Quackity in some way, and the two pretty much made out at Niki's birthday party (also in Season 1, and it's close enough to hard-canon since Wilbur kind of threatened to press the Button at the end of the livestream and had to be talked down from doing so), but their relationship (for lack of a better word) has never been described explicitly, making their relationship status technically ambiguous in canon (though the closest description in reality would probably be "homoerotic rivals"). In many fanworks, they're full-on exes and according to Memetic Mutation, most likely fucked at least once.

    E-H
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Out of all of Techno's pets, Carl, his prized horse, has become inexplicably popular with Techno's top stream donators, which has led him on multiple adventures to ensure the safety of an otherwise unremarkable horse.
    • Among the players themselves, Ranboo is one of the most popular, with his memory loss, mysterious ancestry, and status as The Woobie endearing him to many... which makes it all the more tragic for the fandom when Ranboo gets Killed Off for Real.
    • Out of the canonized stream chats, Techno's is among the most popular, to the point that they have their own theme song, "Voices", written by Derivakat, though it probably helps that they are the first stream chat to be made canon. Phil's Clever Crows have a lot of fanart made of them as well.
    • In light of Quackity's May 22nd stream, Slimecicle has quickly become a very popular character within the fandom, being endeared by his lack of knowledge on how humans work, sheer weirdness, and ability to bring a little humour in the otherwise gritty lore stream. As of mid-August 2021, a fandom survey has reported that approximately 31% of the respondents were apologists for Slimenote , having the fifth highest percentage of apologists (after Ghostbur, Tubbo, Tommy, and Ranboo). As a result, it's no wonder that so many in the fandom cried alongside Quackity when Slime lost his first canon life.
    • Of the one-shot characters from Tales From The SMP, Robin, Helga, Sir Billiam, Watson, and Ranbob all seem to have the largest fanbases. Pretty much any character played by Ranboo is loved by fans, especially the Butler (affectionately nicknamed Ranbutler) and John John.
  • Epileptic Trees:
    • Tommy once claimed that he was created in a laboratory. While whether this is canonical or not is still ambiguous, some fans interpret that Tommy might be a clone of Philza (because of SBI family dynamics), and to take this one step further, that the lab Tommy was cloned in was The Lab, as in DanTDM's Lab. It helps that the two content creators have collaborated before and get along quite well.
    • In mid-October 2020, Karl tweeted out that he "broke the button". Several months later, upon the revelation that his character is a time traveller, fans have suspected that Karl actually broke the Button to stop the Chekhov's Gun from firing too early. However, since Karl cannot choose to what time and place he travels to, this theory is still dubiously canon at best.
    • It has been theorized in some circles that Schlatt's final canon death might not be (directly) caused by a heart attack or a stroke as canon indicates. One of the most popular speculations was that he was being poisoned regularly by one or more members of Manburg's cabinet throughout his Presidency, with Quackity being the most probable option (since he had privately considered assassinating Schlatt in canon at least once before the White House conflict), but Tubbo and/or Fundy doing so isn't unheard of either. Sometimes even all three at the same time, oftentimes without even knowing the others were doing the same.
    • It has been theorized that Quackity is possessed or controlled by Schlatt after eating Schlatt's heart at his funeral, or has some sort of connection with his ghost/spirit in one way or another. While the debut episode of the "Las Nevadas" series seems to disprove this theory for the most part, the series and other related lore streams also indicate Schlatt has left his influence on Quackity, but not in a supernatural way.
    • If Quackity's claim of giving birth to El Rapids is to be believed, it is usually assumed that Schlatt is the (other) father due to Quackity trying to get Schlatt to pay child support through Plan Ass, but one conspiracy theory believes that Wilbur is the real (other) father, because of joke-fanon that the two did more than make out during Niki's birthday party, the fact that El Rapids' original name was Mexican L'Manburg, out of Rule of Funny, etc.
    • One theory (that has since been jossed) on why Sapnap didn't show up to the Red Banquet despite being invited, was that Bad told him to get there early, killed him, then cooked him into soup (a theory that was promptly dubbed "Soupnap").
    • VelvetIsEgg, the theory that fellow content creator and Antfrost's boyfriend VelvetIsCake is the Egg, or what is inside the Egg, has become rather popular despite Velvet not even being on the server. The theory has become so popular that even Velvet himself has noticed it and liked fanart and fan skins based on it.
    • The presence of scorpions and king cobras in Las Nevadas, as confirmed via The Wilbur Van, is a major bit of Misplaced Wildlife considering that Las Nevadas was built in a cold biome which was terraformed to look like a desert. This has prompted fan speculation that Quackity was just really committed to the bit and imported some "desert" animals over (read: king cobras are not native to deserts either) to make Las Nevadas look more like a real desert... which then caused several jokes about how Quackity might have started an invasive species crisis on the Dream SMP. This was later canonized by Wilbur in his livestream "My Own Judas".
  • Everyone is Jesus in Purgatory: Due to the Dream SMP's impromptu roleplay nature, there is often very little symbolism deliberately employed in the plotline/lore, but somehow, small details that can be interpreted as symbolism tend to slip through, including accidental cases of Meaningful Name:
    • "Charlie" Slimecicle's character is a slime who claims to be actually human. 'Charlie' as a name is a diminutive of Charles, which is derived from a Germanic word meaning "man"... and then Quackity officially gives that very character the name "Charlie", saying that he's "human" and "more than just slime".
    • The 'Lazar' in Lazarbeam is most likely a misspelling of 'laser', but it also happens to be an actual name, that being a form of the name Lazarus. Lazarus was a Biblical figure who got brought Back from the Dead by Jesus, the Son of God according to Christianity. Lazar the DSMP character was placed in a Resurrection/Death Loop by a man with a god complex.
  • Fandom VIP: The Dream SMP's story and characters are heavily influenced by the work put in by fan-artists, so it's no surprise that some of them become very famous within the fandom.
    • SAD-ist, an animator on YouTube, is perhaps the most well-known fan in the entire community. Already a relatively popular animator in Dream's community (her previous animation being based on a clip from Dream's Minecraft Manhunt series), she caught the attention of pretty much the entire fandom and of many of the content creators with her Dream SMP War animatic, which sparked a huge uptick in attention for both her channel and the Dream SMP itself.
    • CG5 rose to fame as a singer/songwriter known for creating fan songs based on popular video games; he has many views on his Dream SMP songs, e.g. "Gone Away", and has collaborated with other creators on their music, such as Derivakat (see below) on "Captain's Call" (based on Captain Puffy) and even Tubbo himself on "Life By the Sea". However, his most famous song around the extended Minecraft content creator community is still "I See a Dreamer", based on the Dream Team.
    • Late-August is another animator who rose to popularity due to his unique style, as his animatics are deliberately styled to look like moving paintings. With shout-outs from many fans and Dream SMP members, he rose to popularity fairly quickly, though he's currently taking an indefinite hiatus from the fandom in order to take care of his mental health.
    • WolfyTheWitch is another extremely popular artist and animator, who slowly rose to fame through a steady output of Dream SMP-related animatics and speedpaints.
    • Derivakat is a musician writing fan songs for various characters and events of the SMP. Her songs are often used in fan animatics, and various members of the SMP use her music in their own streams ("Turn Back Time" is the official credits song for "Tales from the SMP", Captain Puffy often uses "4 AM" as background music, etc).
  • Fanon: Given that much of the plot is happening within Minecraft with a lot of room for interpretation on different events, it's become fairly popular for different depictions of the characters to come up, to the point that the most widespread depictions currently have their own page.
  • Foe Yay Shipping: A surprisingly large number of fans ship Karl with the bandits Jack Kanoff and Mason from the Tales From the SMP episode "The Wild West". However, considering that the two bandits are played by Quackity and Sapnap, respectively, it's no surprise that people took this alongside the Reincarnation Romance headcanon and the sheer amount of Ho Yay in the episode, and ran with it.
  • Friendly Fandoms:
    • With Empires SMP, Life SMP and the Hermitcraft, all four being Minecraft roleplay series that seriously took off in the early 2020s (though Hermitcraft was already popular beforehand). Naturally, there's quite a bit of overlap between fandoms, especially with the latter three, as most of the Life SMP members are also either part of Empires or Hermitcraft. Fans often reassure one another when a particularly painful piece of lore drops (for example, Dream SMP fans trying to comfort Traffic Life fans when Last Life's finale dropped on November 16th, a very significant date for Dream SMP fans), and the different roleplay styles of each server are often compared and contrasted for comedic purposes.note
    • In addition, with what's left of the SMPEarth and SMPLive fandoms, as well as the Origins SMP fandom, due to the overlap in content creators.
    • Outside of the Minecraft content creation circle, there's a significant enough fandom overlap with The Owl House for fans to accidentally use the c!-prefix on TOH characters, and with Six: The Musical for there to be a bizarrely memetic joke-crossover AU between the two fandoms.
  • Game-Breaker: In Season 3, Ranboo gained the ability to break blocks with his bare hands and have them remain as blocks instead of items, similar to the Silk Touch enchantment on tools. This is explained by the fact that he is half-enderman, and endermen have a penchant for picking up blocks. However, once others convinced Ranboo to experiment with which exact blocks he can pick up, it was soon discovered just how powerful this ability really is. Not only can he pick up spawners, which can't be normally obtained even with Silk Touch tools, he is also capable of picking up cake that is partially eaten and putting it back down as a full cake, giving him an infinite supply of food. One of the few things that keeps this power from being completely broken is that the blocks he breaks do not retain their metadata, so all the spawners he mines can only be pig spawners, which are the default.
  • Harsher in Hindsight:
    • Dream's behavior towards Tommy in Season 1 was already a bit weird, but became outright terrifying after he spent most of Season 2 stalking, abusing and tormenting Tommy out of a twisted fixation on him. Things like digging tunnels under his house and hiding in his walls to spy on him (something Tommy was absolutely mortified by), gifting only one set of gear to Pogtopia in a package addressed to Tommy, addressing Tommy before Wilbur in his declaration of war against L'Manburg, and continuously logging onto the server just to kill him, steal his discs or otherwise mess with him seem innocent, if a bit creepy, on first watch, but become very obvious foreshadowing to Dream's obsession and future crimes against Tommy.
    • After Schlatt's funeral, Quackity asks Bad for help in resurrecting him as a zombified political puppet, but in the middle of their conversations, Bad tells his chat, "Guys, stop trying to pin it on Dream and Puffy, I know it was Tommy, there's a sign that says it, okay?", clearly addressing some sort of griefing. In that moment, especially from Quackity's perspective*, it seems like a one-off, unrelated incident; little did Bad know, about two weeks later, this would escalate into one of the darkest Story Arcs of Dream SMP history.
    • Early in the same livestream as Schlatt's funeral, Punz also said in the in-game chat (at 26:55) "tommy how dare u blow up my house". Hm... one would wonder if Tommy actually griefed two people's respective properties in the couple of days between the Season 1 finale and the funeral...
    • Can overlap with Hilarious in Hindsight in a very dark way. Before the Manburg Festival in Season 1, as noted in the Tear Jerker page, Wilbur quietly says while explaining his plan, "I miss Philza... I wonder if he'd be proud of me." Phil's response to the chat telling him about this in his solo stream turns out to be, "Proud of him for murdering his friends?! Proud of him for becoming a literal terrorist?! ...that's not the Wilbur I knew. He's fallen off the edge, chat. That's not the way." Come Season 2, Phil himself takes part in the terrorism to nuke Wilbur's legacy to bedrock in the Doomsday War.
    • At the start of Tommy's March 1st stream, it's revealed that he's been doing nothing but annoy Dream for the entire week he's been trapped in the prison with him. Seeing him being his infuriating self is pretty funny, until the reveal that Tommy is trying to use it as a coping mechanism to deal with being trapped, since as long as he's pissing off Dream, he doesn't need to think about the fact that he's trapped in a box with all of his worst fears. It then gets worse when Dream, completely fed up with Tommy's constant infuriating bullshit, flies off the handle and beats him to death with his bare hands.
    • At the end of Season 2, Wilbur and Tommy ended their conversation saying that they would see each other soon. A little over a month later (in real world time; it would be less than three years in Afterlife-time), Dream took Tommy's third canon life, sending him to the Afterlife to indeed reunite with Wilbur... though to say their reunion went well would be a lie. In the same conversation, Wilbur claims to be horrified at the idea of keeping Dream alive to use the contents of the revive-book on him, explicitly saying he didn't want to be brought back to life. Once Wilbur actually does get brought Back from the Dead, his descriptions of the Afterlife and what he experienced during it (i.e. what he was experiencing at the time the conversation took place) implicate that he'd rather stay in the torturous Afterlife... and knowing Wilbur, we all know what those reasons are...
    • The revelation during the Season 1 finale that Quackity had tried hard to impress Schlatt, only to be further demeaned and have the White House that he helped build torn down is bad enough on its own, but it gets worse when something similar unintentionally happens again months later, when Quackity had finally got into a somewhat healthy relationship and built Las Nevadas for his loved ones in El Rapids, only for them to build Kinoko Kingdom without him (they didn't leave him out intentionally, but he doesn't know that), which is implied to cause feelings of insecurity to resurface... and proceed to wreak havoc on his mentality, and as a result of his spiral, the server.
    • Quackity's relationship with Schlatt during the Manburg era as a whole, though having shades of toxicity, had many humorous moments throughout it, even after their "breakup", but come Season 3 and it turns out that Quackity still carries a lot of emotional trauma from the abusive aspects of the relationship, to the point that very trauma is implied to send him down the type of spiral that makes it much more difficult for him to come back from, making rewatches of the Manburg-era VODs significantly less funny.
    • Ranboo begging to be put in the prison and Sam refusing to, which was already heartbreaking, becomes a lot harder to watch after he not only actually goes through with it in Technoblade's Jailbreak stream, but kills Ranboo. Especially since according to Ghostboo, Sam told Ranboo that he "knew what he did" before arresting him. "I can't tell you what I have!" indeed...
    • A meta example. The message Technoblade wrote for Phil that also acted as a will in case he did not survive his visit to Pandora's Vault was sad, that's for sure, but it becomes even sadder after his content creator counterpart's passing.
  • He Really Can Act:
    • Everybody involved in the SMP's roleplay has proven themselves to be an above-average actor at worst, but Wilbur and Schlatt deserve special mention for playing the roles of a noble man falling into mental illness and a tyrannical dictator, respectively.
    • Special mention for Dream as well. While not a bad actor, he's most definitely not the best, as he's often a bit awkward. However, when he shines, he really shines, with dialogue and delivery on par with the best of the cast. His "white flags" speech from the L'Manburg War of Independence, for example, is one of the most iconic moments of the SMP purely because Dream sounds genuinely pissed off at L'Manburg and manages to sound like a serious threat. Later on, during the scene where Tommy tries to blackmail him with Spirit's remains, he once again manages to sound genuinely livid, and delivers probably some of the most bone-chilling lines of the entire SMP. The second speech was all improvised too, since Dream had no idea Tommy was going to try and blackmail him. Since Dream doesn't stream his perspective on the SMP, his appearances are all on other people's livestreams and rely on his voice-acting and Minecraft body language. And he nails it down to the subtle body movements, which many attribute to him being a speedrunner.
    • Tommy himself definitely deserves a special mention as well. He's really gotten the chance to flex his acting skills during the Exile arc, playing the role of a kid slowly being driven into depression incredibly well. Something unique about Tommy's acting is that, unlike many others on the server, he involves his facecam in his acting. You can see how Tommy's character is feeling just by looking at his face, and that in and of itself is super impressive.
    • If there's one person that really gives it their all, it's Ranboo. His solo scenes are absolutely gripping, his voice is full of emotion, and during his trip to the panic room after the second festival, he sounds genuinely on the verge of tears. It's incredibly impressive that he's acting with no facecam on, and therefore acting with his voice alone.
    • Quackity also deserves a special mention for portraying a formerly noble man descending into morally-dark territory in the midst of trauma and paranoia, with some of his in-universe manipulation speeches being genuinely chilling. Heck, Jack Manifold himself considers Quackity to be the best actor on the Dream SMP, which should probably count for something.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Whenever an important death happens, it is often referred to as a canon death. Because they are tied to major events like the L'Manburg wars, you could consider them to be Canon Events.
    • During the Doomsday War, Techno shouts "You don't see these at Manhunts!" as he shoots fireworks from his crossbow. One month later, the very next Manhunt* to be released had Dream utilize firework-loaded crossbows as his final ploy against the hunters. One gets the impression that Dream heard this and decided to prove Techno wrong. It gets even funnier when Slimecicle refers to Dream as "Dream from Manhunt", which implies that the Manhunts are, to some degree, canonical.
    • Any and every time MotherInnit interrupted Tommy's DSMP livestreams became this when she declared herself to be a/the goddess of life in the Dream SMP canon, thus ambiguously-canonizing her interruptions of her son's antics, such as yelling at him to stop swearing and telling him to do his chores in the middle of a political crisis.
    • Back in early Season 2 (November 2020), Ranboo laid out his plans to run for President of L'Manburg, and one of those plans was to turn Purpled orange. Over a year later, in mid-March 2022, it was announced that Purpled would participate in MCC20... on the Orange Ocelots team. Guess even after L'Manburg had long fallen, Ranboo's proposed policies would still come into action.
  • Ho Yay: Has its own page.

    I-O
  • Idiosyncratic Ship Naming: Largely platonic variants, since shipping tends to be a touchy subject in the fanbase (unless it's canonical to the lore).
    • Allium Duo (Tommy and Ranboo). Called this because Ranboo gave Tommy an allium on his first day on the server, which Tommy then kept around in a hidden chest, only to be found by Ranboo again after Tommy's death in the prison. Prior to Tommy's death, they were also known as the Loyal Duo, due to them standing up for each other during Tommy's trial in the Exile Conflict (Tommy covering for Ranboo on his involvement in the griefing of George's mushroom house, and Ranboo testifying in Tommy's favour).
    • Angel Duo (Phil and Tommy). Called this because Phil is the "Angel of Death" and a Winged Humanoid, while Tommy is often one in some popular fanon due to being Phil's son or son-figure.
    • Autotune Trio (Quackity, Wilbur, and Charlie Slimecicle). Called this in reference to their tendency to use copious amounts of Auto-Tune for various gags throughout The Funniest Minecraft Videos Ever, and also in light of the revelation that Charlie Slimecicle plays a part in Quackity's "Las Nevadas" lore along with Wilbur.
    • Bedrock Bros (Techno and Tommy). Called this because they own the only pieces of bedrock on the SMP, as gifts from Drista during one of her visits.
    • Bee Duo (Tubbo and Ranboo). Called this because one of the first major activities they did together was to make a dome for bees in New L'Manburg.
    • Bench Trio (Tommy, Tubbo and Ranboo). Called this because of their meeting spot on the bench by Tommy's house.
    • Bitter Duo (Jack and Tommy). Called this due to their shared bitterness and hostility, most notably on Jack's end.
    • Cabinet Duo (Tubbo and Quackity). Called this due to both of them being prominent members of Schlatt's cabinet in Manburg, thus having lots of shared experience and history with each other through it.* Some people also call them the "Short Duo" due to both of them being considered short when compared with their friends, who usually have at least several inches on them.
    • Clingy Duo (Tommy and Tubbo). Called this because in the early days of the SMP, Tommy would often accuse Tubbo of being clingy whenever he tried to hang out or show affection.
    • Crime Boys (Tommy and Wilbur). Called this because both have described themselves as "the (dirty) crime boy" at some point.
    • Dap Duo (Quackity and Charlie). Called this because of Charlie's catchphrase ("Dap me up!") and how often he uses it with Quackity.
    • Disc Duo (Dream and Tommy). Called this because of the Disc War. They are also known as the "Primeboys" as the creators of Church Prime on the SMP.
    • Emerald Duo (Techno and Phil). Called this in tribute to Phil's Friendship Emeralds. Also called the "Boreal Duo" because they live up in one of the northern snow biomes, or the Antarctic Empire Duo as a nod to SMPEarth.
    • Eternal Duo (Eret and Foolish). Called this because of the two being Old Friends (Foolish being a ancient Physical God, and Eret being Ambiguously Human due to their connection with Herobrine, resulting in many fan theories about his true age and mortality), apparently having taken on a Wither Cult together, though Eret doesn't remember their adventures.
    • The Fiancés (Karl, Sapnap, and Quackity). Called this because they're all engaged to each other in the DSMP canon. Also called the Polycule for this reason, though the latter name is usually referring to their fictional counterparts, while the former can refer to both characters and content creators.
    • Fireworks Duo (Technoblade and Tubbo). Called this because Tubbo's execution at the Manburg Festival by Techno involved having fireworks shot in his face.
    • Neapolitan Trio (Technoblade, Wilbur, and Tommy). Called this in honour of Neapolitan ice-cream, which is reminiscent of the three's hair colours.note
    • Prey Duo (Technoblade and Quackity). Called this because of Techno's "hunters and prey" speech in response to Quackity trying to face his Minecraft Monday-induced fears in Season 1. Following the revelation that the two content creators share a real-life given name, some fans have joked about renaming their 'duo name' to "Alex Squared".
    • Pumpkin Duo (Jschlatt and Quackity). Called this because Schlatt affectionately nicknamed Q his "sugar pumpkin"... which has unfortunately become a Trauma Button for Quackity the character in canon. Yeah...
    • Pyro Duo (Sapnap and Tommy). Called this because of their association with fire and sometimes destruction from burning.
    • The Revengers (Tubbo, Eret, and Technoblade). Called this because they teamed up together to rescue Michael and avenge Ranboo by locking Sam up in Pandora's Vault, and Tubbo himself dubbed their alliance this in canon.
    • Rocket Duo (Jack and Niki). Called this based on the memes comparing their team-up to Jesse and James of Team Rocket, which the two content creators happily embraced.
    • Sam's Kids (Hannah, Boomer, Quackity, and Tommy). Called this because Sam has taken on a somewhat paternal role to all of them at some point, with their combined family dynamic known as the "Awesamfam". Sometimes, George is also considered part of this dynamic.
    • Sleepy Boys Inc. (Tommy, Techno, Wilbur and Phil). A pre-existing nickname that spawned from an inside joke on Twitter, usually shortened to SBI.
    • TNT Duo (Quackity and Wilbur). Called this because both of them have made major structures go kaboom at some point on the server (Quackity tried to blow up the Egg, while Wilbur successfully destroyed L'Manburg), and they have since had lore collaborations in the "Las Nevadas" arc. Due to the fact that they are far from the only ones to use TNT to destroy something on the SMP (case in point, the Doomsday War), some fans opt to use other nicknames for them. In the roleplay, specifically, their relationship appears to be drifting suspiciously towards Belligerent Sexual Tension territory as of the end of May 2021, so some fans may use "Quackbur" to refer to their not-so-platonic dynamic instead.
    • Treasure Duo (Sapnap and Ranboo). Called this due to their participation in "The Beach Episode" of Tales From the SMP, with Ranboo being voted as "Best Pirate" by the audience, and Sapnap being gifted an RTX 3080 graphics card from the "Best Pirate" prize by him, due to him already having an RTX 3090.
    • The Triple Ts (Tubbo, Tommy, and Jack). Called this because all of their nicknames started with a T, and was an In-Universe group name coined by Tommy. Has since been retired after Jack rebranded from Thunder1408 to JackManifoldTV, although they are still called it by fans on occasion.
    • Twins Duo (Wilbur and Techno). Called this because in the Sleepy Boys Inc. family dynamic (see above), Wilbur declared him and Techno twins, with Techno being older by two minutes. Although this has been retconned out of canon, it's still a fairly popular dynamic in fan works.
    • Vice Duo (Quackity and Tommy). Called this for being former Vice Presidents of L'Manburg or Manburg, as well as dabbling in various vices. They're also called "Feather Duo" by some due to both having wings in fanon designs; other names may apply as well, e.g. "Calamity Duo" on Twitter (for... currently unknown reasons).
  • Inferred Holocaust: The many detonations of L'Manburg pose horrible implications for fans who engage in "Citizen POV" content; under the interpretation that unnamed civilians live on the DSMP server alongside the streamers' characters, it's heavily implied that most L'Manburgians would be rendered homeless, if not severely injured or killed, as a result of the wars that ravaged the lands. Doomsday is the biggest offender — fifteen Withers and enough Death from Above to annihilate a nation to bedrock, to the point it is never rebuilt again? Jack Manifold already lost his third canon life in Doomsday, so who's to say he's the only fatality?note  At least Wilbur canonically said something about not wanting his suicide-explosion of Manburg to hurt anyone other than Schlatt (and himself)…
  • Jerkass Woobie: Tommy. Tommy is a rude, abrasive, purposely annoying kleptomaniac who lashes out constantly, but he's been put through the wringer over and over and over again. He's lost two canon lives in a war at age 16, been exiled, watched his surrogate older bother's mental health spiral until he blew up their home and died from Suicide by Cop, been exiled again and horrifically abused, watched the man he trusted to keep him safe team up with his abuser and destroy his home beyond repair, been kidnapped by his abuser and nearly watched his best friend be murdered in front of him, got trapped with his abuser for a week and was then beaten to death, spent two months in a torturous Personalized Afterlife before being revived, then watched another friend die in front of him while trying to kill his abuser. The fact that Tommy is a Jerkass (albeit one with a Heart of Gold) makes him, paradoxically, more vulnerable to Dream's abuse. While some were vocally opposed to Tommy's exile, many others saw it as comeuppance, or were relieved that he wasn't their problem anymore, and Techno, Sapnap, Lazar and Quackity even came to visit with the express purpose of mocking him. While none of them knew that Tommy was being abused, the fact that they mocked him for being in his situation only served to make him even more susceptible to Dream's subtle insistence that nobody cared about him anymore, and more hostile to visitors who did come visit with good intentions.
  • LGBT Fanbase: Quite a large one, to the point where a poll in Jack's chat showed that his audience is about 80% lesbians. There's also some representation in the roleplay, as several server-members have gotten into same-gender relationships with one another: Ninja and George got married, Karl, Sapnap and Quackity are engaged to each other in a polyamorous relationship, and Fundy is canonically transgender. Several of the members are also LGBTQ+ in real life: Ant is gay, Niki, Puffy, and Eret are bisexual (Eret also uses any pronouns), and Karl is on the asexual spectrum, etc. As a result of the latter, it's usually assumed that LGBTQ+ content creators' GRSM identities also apply to their characters.
  • Like You Would Really Do It: Subverted. Although fans didn't think that Wilbur would blow up L'Manberg as too much effort was put in to it, they actually did it.
  • Love to Hate: Despite being mostly accepted as a Hate Sink, it's still common to see Jschlatt being called a great villain, mostly due to his acting and funny moments.
  • Magnificent Bastard:
    • Quackity manages to subvert his Butt-Monkey status post–Manberg vs. Pogtopia. Once the The Dragon to Jschlatt whom he helped win the presidential election, Quackity would end up double-crossing his boss after a long string of mistreatment and abuse, before joining up with Pogtopia in order to help take down the maniacal dictator. Becoming enraged at Technoblade for pulling a last-minute betrayal and bombing L'Manberg, Quackity establishes the Butcher Army alongside his fellow L'Manberg citizens in order to hunt him down, with him almost succeeding in such thanks to pulling a fast one on the warrior by holding his prized horse Carl for ransom. Having lost his initial battle with Technoblade, Quackity, now scarred, begins building up a new country known as "Las Nevadas", electing himself as ruler. Looking to find worthy allies to assist him in the process, Quackity begins to implore sleazy tactics in order to get what he wants, whether it's blowing up Purpled's prized UFO, or allowing Foolish to be sacrificed and killed in the Red Banquet, all for the sake of proving a point. Showing himself to be a formidable foe through and through, Quackity proves that no matter the obstacles or setbacks, he will rise up against the odds and get what he wants.
    • Technoblade is a ruthless anarchist with a strong belief that power corrupts. Joining Pogtopia under the pretense of being able to take down L'Manberg, Technoblade quickly proves himself to be a powerful ally, supplying the rebellion with gear that gives them a significant leg up in battle. Upon learning that Pogtopia had no intention of destroying L'Manberg, but rather keeping the system going, Technoblade rebels against them, using TNT and Withers to leave L'Manberg in ruins. Going into hiding post-battle, Technoblade attempts to settle down, moving past his anarchist ways to live a life of peace and tranquility, only to be thrust right back into the conflict when the Butcher Army, lead by Quackity, comes in and attempts to give Technoblade retribution for his crimes. Enraged by this act and viewing it as a great injustice, Technoblade prepares a full-on attack on L'Manberg, using countless Withers that he had kept contained for months in case of an event such as this occuring. Teaming up with Dream and Philza, the three of them lay waste to L'Manberg, reducing it to a point that puts the country's initial destruction to shame. Establishing the Syndicate following this event, Technoblade has since dedicated his time to making sure no forms of government could ever rise to power again. Powerful, ruthless, and always managing to succeed in his goals, Technoblade proves that he can easily be your greatest ally, or your worst enemy.
  • Memetic Badass:
    • Jack Manifold, courtesy of being one of the few people to attack Technoblade directly during L'Manburg's final destruction and losing all three of his lives, only to go to Hell and then return, gaining all three of his lives back out of sheer willpower and revenge. "Man literally too angry to die", indeed, to the point that many of his fans cheer that "nothing can stop the Jack Manifold grind", not even death.
    • Technoblade, as a carry-over from his fanbase beyond the SMP. On the SMP itself, on top of being feared by most of the members on the server for his combat prowess, he also manages to survive his own execution and kill a man with iron armor and a pickaxe while said opponent was wearing a set of full enchanted netherite armor during the aftermath of the execution. "Technoblade never dies", indeed.
  • Memetic Mutation: Being a large, Internet-based fanbase, this is to be expected, to the point that they require their own page.
  • Misaimed Fandom:
    • The various events that happen in the Dream SMP (such as the various wars and the election) are all just improvised roleplay done just for fun, with all the members getting in-character based on the ongoing event. Unfortunately, several fans believe they aren't fake, and have sent hate messages towards people that act as the villains (such as Eret, Quackity and Jschlatt). Fortunately, this seems to have at least somewhat died down after Season 1, with Season 2 onwards making the division between roleplay and real life much more apparent.
Quackity: (at his stream chat; using a voice-changer that is apparently reserved for PSAs) CHAT, THIS IS A BIT! IT'S A BIT, CHAT! IT'S THE ELECTIONS. IT'S MINECRAFT BLOCK GAME ELECTIONS. IT IS A FUCKING GAME. IT IS A FUCKING STREAM, BUDDY. WE ARE NOT HURTING REAL PEOPLE. CALM THE FUCK DOWN!
    • In Season 1, L'Manburg was founded to be a nation with a staunch stance against tyranny and police brutality, and intended to stand as a "special place" for people to be free from it. Unfortunately, its advocation for freedom labelled it as a "freedom flag" and thus attracted attention from the alt-right, who waved the L'Manburg flag on the same pole as a Trump2024 flag during a London protest in late July 2021 against vaccinations against COVID-19 from the government (to help mitigate, you know, a global pandemic), which they saw as "tyrannical", without even knowing the context behind the flag. Three of the four founders of L'Manburg (Wilbur, Tommy, and Tubbo) found this absolutely hilarious, and when this got on the news, Quackity's (a later member of L'Manburg) response was to announce that Las Nevadas, his country on the SMP at the time, was offering free vaccinations.
    • This was discussed by Technoblade during one stream. He brought up a Twitter post he found in which numerous people praised him for not resorting to dark humor to be funny, when he was one of the biggest sources of Crosses the Line Twice humor out of everyone on the SMP (see here for more examples). He was understandably baffled by it.
Techno: I talk about punching orphans literally every ten minutes! Whose stream have they been watching?!
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Jschlatt crossed it when he ordered Tubbo's execution for being The Mole for Pogtopia during the Manburg Festival, despite everyone else in attendance, including his own cabinet and the executioner himself, objecting and voicing alternatives such as imprisoning him. And for bonus points, Schlatt made Tubbo organize the Manburg Festival, i.e. unknowingly plan his own execution.
    • Although Dream is the villain of the roleplay, his intentions can still be argued to be well-intentioned and understandable throughout the first season. But then, in Season 2, he abused, psychologically tortured and gaslighted Tommy during his exile from L'Manburg (which he manipulated into occurring), which alone pushes him close to the edge... and then when he found Tommy's secret stash of items in a hidden chest, he blows it up and drives Tommy to the brink of suicide, easily skydiving off the slippery slope and cementing his crossing of the MEH on his way down. If it helps, during his tour of the server's history with Eryn, Eret personally cites Exile as what proved Dream to be "evil" and takes him to the remains of Logstedshire as evidence.
  • More Interesting as a Villain: It is a common occurrence for fans to root for their favorite character to have a "villain arc", even if canon doesn't imply or support this.
    • Niki gets this treatment often as fans want to see a female villain. In canon, although she does have beef with Tommy at one point, she mostly stays away from conflict in favor of being a Sweet Baker. In fanon, fans will often portray her as a girlboss villain pushed to the edge by the way others treat her.
    • Tommy is mostly morally ambiguous to good in canon, and is treated by many fans as the story's protagonist. However, he is also often written as a villain in various AUs, primarily superhero AUs. There are over a thousand fanfictions tagged "Villain TommyInnit" on Archive of Our Own.
    • Ranboo also gets this to a lesser extent, as in canon he is a bit of a pushover who avoids choosing sides. Fans frequently want to see him grow a backbone and finally snap, and villainy is one of the paths this is sometimes explored in fanworks through. He is also sometimes portrayed as a bad guy by proxy, as people will write his Enderwalking as a possession-like state with malicious intent.
  • Narm: Unfortunately, it can be difficult for some people to take the extremely dark and serious events of the SMP's story seriously due to the simple, blocky, and highly unrealistic-looking medium of Minecraft. With the lack of elaborate editing and dramatic lighting and/or effects, it ends up becoming a case of Kayfabe sometimes. There, however, are many fan animations of Signature Scenes on YouTube that make the scenes appear much cooler and more realistic, and there are plenty of fans who find the in-game body language, sometimes combined with content creator facecam, to be quite expressive and charming in its own right.
  • Never Live It Down: Wilbur is often referred to as a "fishfucker" for the strange chain of events that led to Fundy's birth, even though it was only brought up a few times in the SMP. To be fair, the absurdity of the situation alone, as well as the fact that Wilbur the content creator was quite adamant about Sally the Salmon not being a shapeshifter and being an actual fish, is enough to warrant Memetic Mutation. It doesn't help that two more "fishfuckers" decided to, ahem, follow in his footsteps and emerge in the Empires SMP fandom.
  • One-Scene Wonder:
    • DreamXD has only appeared a few times so far — once as the Dreamon that was exorcised from Dream, and again to destroy the End Portal to keep Techno and Phil from activating it. The sheer mystery of both scenes (especially the latter) and DreamXD's status as a Gate Guardian and possible Big Good to contrast the man they split off from (not to mention the brief moment of comedy that comes with him returning a piece of the End Portal as a table) have made them wildly popular. His third appearance in George's March 31st lore stream has, needless to say, spawned quite a lot of fanart and speculation about him as well, and his fourth appearance in Techno's stream "The Prison Podcast" is also met with enthusiasm. In late Season 3 to early Season 4, however, XD has been appearing more often in canon throughout his interactions with Foolish on stream, causing him to gradually drift away from One-Scene Wonder status over time.
    • Techno's dog Apollo only appeared for the Jailbreak stream to get Dream out of prison (as he died in the process of the prison break), but many fans have been endeared to him, including fans who are heavily critical of Techno and the rest of the Syndicate.

    P-W
  • Pop Culture Holiday:
    • April 24th, 2021 was widely anticipated by the fans for the 1st anniversary of the founding of the server. It helps that the Red Banquet, an important lore event, occurred on the day after the anniversary.
    • July 29th is widely celebrated as L'Manburg's Independence Day (or "birthday"), as the beginning of the country kicked off the SMP's storyline and "lore", shaping the server to what it is today. August 2nd is celebrated for similar reasons, but rather for the day L'Manburg won independence, though at a high cost.
    • The anniversaries of the days certain streamers joined the SMP are treated as their characters' "birthdays", on top of their real life birthdays.
    • November 16th is widely recognized as the anniversary of the Season 1 finale, and on its first anniversary, fans widely anticipated lore in response to the significance of the day... in the end, there wasn't a Wham Episode on that anniversary, but there were two in a row within the two weeks that followed the first anniversary that marked the end of Season 3 and start of Season 4.
  • Portmanteau Couple Name: The few romantic ships on the server (canonical or otherwise) tend to have this, as opposed to the Idiosyncratic Ship Naming for platonic relationships.
    • A carryover from the content creators' fandoms is DreamNotFound (Dream/George), usually shortened to DNF. An exclusive version ships DreamXD (Dream's godly Alternate Self) with George as well, usually called XDNotFound or XDNF.
    • Ninja and George's Citizenship Marriage is usually called NinjaNotFound.
    • Karl and Sapnap is usually known as Karlnap, with the expanded polyamory with Quackity being popularly named Karlnapity on Tumblr, or are addressed as the Fiancés. Separately, Karl/Quackity is usually referred to as Karlity, Quackkarl, Honkity (a portmanteau of "honk", a substitute word that Karl uses a lot, and Quackity), or HonkQ; while Quackity/Sapnap is often called Quacknap or Sapity.
    • The ship between BadBoyHalo and Skeppy is most commonly known as Skephalo, another carryover from the content creators' fandoms outside the SMP. They are also sometimes known as the "Happy Duo", though that in itself qualifies as a portmanteau between BadBoyHalo and Skeppy.
    • Awesamdude/Ponk is called AwesamPonk, and the Love Triangle variant involving Foolish is known as FoolSamPonk.
    • Puffy and Niki (Nihachu) is known as Puffychu.
    • Quackity and Wilbur's homoerotic rivalry and subsequent ship is called Quackbur, though some may opt for the idiosyncratic forms listed above.
    • The ship between Quackity and Slimecicle is Quackcicle, while platonic content uses the idiosyncratic method.
  • Realism-Induced Horror:
    • In comparison to some of the more silly conflicts and interactions happening on the server, Dream's abuse, manipulation and gaslighting of Tommy is downright terrifying due to how realistic it is portrayed, to the point that some viewers have had to step back from the series for the time being due to being reminded of their own experiences.
    • Dream manages to also be on the receiving end of this when Quackity started to visit him in prison.
  • Ron the Death Eater:
    • Tommy is often scapegoated as the cause of conflicts and chaos on the server, even though it was already quite chaotic before he stepped foot on the SMP, to the point that he is often blamed for events and actions he had nothing to do with. Vocal Dream apologists also tend to accuse Tommy of provoking Dream into doing what he did in canon, which included starting his fall into villainy at the tamest and victim-blaming him for getting abused or killed at worst. It's best to say that this stance is highly contested in the fandom for a large variety of reasons.
    • Wilbur is just as often accused of actions he didn't do on the SMP, e.g. abusing and/or manipulating his younger brother-figures in his delusions during the Pogtopia arc (which is not a justification for traumatizing them, but it isn't exactly manipulation when he genuinely believed in his delusions), abandoning Niki by dying from assisted suicide in his mental spiral, etc. Hardcore Dream apologists even point fingers at Wilbur for "manipulating" Dream in the Pogtopia arc, though there is evidence to the contrary throughout the history of the SMP. It is conclusive to say that the fandom's stance on Wilbur Soot the character would vary from person to person, and we'll leave it at that.
    • While Quackity has been going down the morally dubious route since some of his earlier days on the server, fan mischaracterization of him spiked since Season 2 and especially in the Butcher Army arc, where many fan depictions of him were stripped of nuance to the point of being a one-dimensional villain (at least partially due to the large number of Techno-sympathetic fans) — one infamous fanfic even has him threaten a child version of Tommy, even though Tommy is one of the characters that Quackity canonically has a soft spot for. This demonization is taken up to eleven during his Las Nevadas arc, where he becomes even more morally dubious/dark, and since many newer fans haven't taken the trip down VOD lane to rewatch Quackity's pre-LNV streams and often rely on skewed recaps, they are often quick to accuse Quackity of unnuanced evil.
    • Sam ends up on the wrong end of this trope a lot in Season 3, as the ruthless Warden of Pandora's Vault. Granted, he did take a massive level in jerkass in the related story arcs and canonically tortured his love interest for a prank because of his 'duty' as the Warden, but his attitude towards Dream seem to vary depending on the depiction — in canon, he is revolted towards Dream's actions and prefers to distance himself from the guy who's locked up in the prison he's supposed to be in charge of, to the point of making an automated feeding system so that he doesn't have to interact with Dream on a regular basis, and is highly protective of Tommy as a result of Dream's actions towards him; in certain fan depictions, he actively participates in torturing and otherwise hurting Dream as well, rather than being the enabler that he was/is canonically. It doesn't help that Sam the content creator has had to explicitly joss the idea of his character actively torturing Dream in a Q&A.
  • Rooting for the Empire:
    • It's not uncommon to find people who rooted for Dream in the L'Manburg War of Independence. His character back then was not the Card-Carrying, overtly abusive Control Freak who believes that Virtue Is Weakness that fans know him as nownote , so he was seen by some as the reasonable party who wants Tommy's and Wilbur's scheming to end. Similarly, some believe he was the reasonable party in the Disc War, and consider Tommy the one to blame for starting it, even though that should be logically impossible, since the discs were Tommy's from the start.
    • Wilbur, even before the trauma he had caused Tommy in his spiral, was a schemer above all else. L'Manburg was partially founded as a way to keep the Greater SMP's law from inhibiting his drug business (though the 'drugs' part becomes more toned down, if not outright irrelevant, as the war wages on). In spite of this, and his later mental health spiral, he's adored by the fanbase for being such a charismatic and charming character in the setting. Fitting for a man who managed to found an entire nation which several arcs were centered around.
    • Technoblade gets this in spades during the L'Manburg Civil War and Doomsday Arcs. To run down the track-list, he's committed mass terrorism on multiple occasions, hid his intentions to perform said terrorism despite claiming otherwise, tortured people to get his weapons and armor back, and started an anti-government organization that acts like a Secret Police force, engaging in forced searches to dismantle any semblance of organized society. In spite of all of this, by the time of the Doomsday War, the tone of the streams and their audiences were entirely dependent on whose stream you were watching: Technoblade's POV featured an unending tide of memes and fanfare, whereas L'Manburg's was just fearful and later bitterly somber. The big reason for this? Technoblade, in large part thanks to his Deadpan Snarker tendencies, is a Fountain of Memes, and has one of the larger followings among the YouTubers that are in the SMP, coupled with his character tending to have a drastically different perspective on thingsnote  that are going to be the only frame of reference for his fans (which has, needless to say, generated a lot of conflict in the fandom).
  • Second Verse Curse: The L'Manburg National Anthem is usually only known by its first verse, which was sung throughout the Pogtopia arc and written on the walls of the Button Room. The later verses, forming the "Completed Symphony", was completed by Ghostbur at the start of Season 2, and is known to relatively few in the fandom outside of the odd cover version and the Wiki. Even In-Universe, the only ones who knew of the later verses were Ghostbur and Quackity.
  • Shocking Moments:
    • There were some who believed Wilbur was bluffing and that he wouldn't destroy L'Manburg as he so claimed, believing too much would be lost. Cue the final battle of the L'Manburg Civil War, where Wilbur presses the button and blows L'Manburg to kingdom come.
    • Also from said battle, Jschlatt's death by an alcohol-induced heart attack (or stroke), followed by Philza killing Wilbur at the latter's request. Death Is Cheap normally applies to Minecraft, the Dream SMP included. Not so much with those two.
    • Some expected Tommy to canonically die at the hands of Technoblade after the former moved to under the latter's house, being done with Dream's manipulation during exilenote . Instead, Tommy manages to negotiate a deal with Techno involving the reclamation of Tommy's discs, with Techno even showing him another secret vault, containing a set of Netherite armor, and enough wither skeleton skulls to create 55 Withers.
    • Tommy's third canon death at Dream's hands (or rather, raw potato) during the lockdown of Pandora's Vault, to the point that many mistook it for a blooper at first.
  • Signature Scene: Many scenes have become synonymous with the SMP.
    • From the L'Manburg War of Independence:
      • Sapnap burning down Tubbo's house, followed by Dream making a Join or Die proposal to L'Manburg.
      • Eret's betrayal, which the members of L'Manburg weren't told about, meaning that their surprise is genuine.
      • Wilbur defying Dream to his face, followed by Dream blowing up L'Manburg from the inside.
      • Tommy ultimately giving up his music discs to Dream to secure L'Manburg's independence.
    • From the L'Manburg Election to the L'Manburg Civil War:
      • Jschlatt's inauguration speech.
      • Technoblade joining the server after months of predicting he'd do so.
      • Tommy proudly declaring that he has Technoblade on his side to Sapnap, which is perfectly timed to Techno himself logging on.
      • All of the Battle of the Lake, with Tommy, Dream, and Techno teaming up for the first and perhaps only time ever.
      • Wilbur's mental spiral.
      • All of the Manburg Festival, from Tubbo's execution to Techno's subsequent massacre of the festival's attendees (including Jschlatt and Quackity), truly cementing himself as a Wild Card.
      • Quackity's Heel–Face Turn, brought on by Jschlatt mocking him one too many times.
      • A drunken Jschlatt being cornered by Dream, Techno, Tommy, Wilbur, and the rest of Pogtopia, followed by his subsequent heart attack/stroke and death.
      • Philza joining the server after months of anticipation, followed by Wilbur committing to the bit and blowing up L'Manburg to kingdom come, as well as the Suicide by Cop that ensued.
      • Technoblade's speech to Tommy, foreshadowing Tommy becoming an exile from New L'Manburg.
    • From the Reconstruction Era to the Disunion Era, i.e. Season 2:
    • From the start of Dream's imprisonment to the events surrounding Dream's escape from Pandora's Vault, i.e. Season 3:
      • Tommy's third canon death in Pandora's Vault and his subsequent resurrection.
      • Quackity visiting Dream in prison and promising to torture him every day for the knowledge of the revive book.
      • The Red Banquet as a whole, but especially Quackity and Techno's team-up and Puffy killing Antfrost in revenge for feeding her son's life force to the Egg.
      • Tommy deciding to "./hug" Ranboo.
      • Wilbur's revival, as well as his description of the Personalized Afterlife.
      • Techno's escape from Pandora's Vault using the Ender Pearl Stasis Chamber.
      • Quackity's fourth "Las Nevadas" stream as a whole, but in particular the Fiancés' Second-Act Breakup and Slimecicle's death.
      • Tommy's unwanted reunion with Dream in Logstedshire after the latter's escape from prison.
    • From after Dream's escape to Project Early Dawn, i.e. Season 4:
  • Spiritual Successor: To SMPEarth (and, to a degree, SMPLive), being private SMP servers, especially after getting several faces from that time such as Wilbur, Techno, Tommy and Philza.
  • Squick: The implicit age gap between Schlatt and Quackity's character counterparts, with the former being heavily implied to be much older than his content creator counterpart (especially if the offhanded remark that he was around 40 is anything to go by), and the latter being around his content creator counterpart in age (which would be 19 at the time). Adding the sexually-charged abuse into the mix adds to the squick factor.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring:
    • Some people dislike the Dream SMP due to how very few characters, according to them, have "positive character arcs", as many characters' arcs are centered around their mental health decline, and the Yank the Dog's Chain and Happy Ending Override moments/arcs sometimes drive fans away from the plotline, as it appears their favourite characters' suffering would never end.
    • The Doomsday War and the events of the Disunion Era, after it resulted in the destruction of the oldest and most significant nation of the SMP, several characters having mental breakdowns or moral corruptions, the Badlands swooping in to fill the power vacuum left by L'Manburg, the only characters that remain uncorrupted and/or truly see what's going on (Tubbo, Puffy, Sapnap, Karl, Quackity and Ghostbur) so scattered that they'll never be able to form a meaningful front, and the antagonists (Techno, Dream and Philza) getting off without any major punishment or loss. This has resulted in quite a bit of criticism from fans, who feel like there's no reason to care anymore if everyone is going to hyper-focus on punishing Tommy, instead of going after Dream.
    • The conclusion to Tommy getting trapped in prison with Dream was a hard blow for many fans. The image of a boy going to confront his fears one final time in an effort to seek closure, only to then be trapped in a box of his worst fears for a week and be brutally beaten to death by his abuser, was extremely upsetting, and turned quite a few people away from the story.
    • By the end of Volume 1, the SMP feels less like a Minecraft roleplay server and more like Torture Porn written by several people in Minecraft. Tommy dies in prison forgiving Dream, his abuser, for all the heinous shit he's pulled, Dream has effectively gotten away with ruining the lives of several people on the server, Technoblade would die without any comeuppance for his acts of terrorism and murdersnote , several people would kill themselves over fake evidence about the kidnapping of Puffy on a party hosted for her while she would be corrupted by the Egg's influence, the Egg would hatch soon after and the entirety of the server would get nuked in an attempt made by Tommy and Tubbo to kill Dream, which would be sabotaged by Jack to try and kill Tommy, leading to Tubbo and Jack getting trapped in the prison a room away from Tommy and killed. In general, a majority of the server basically lived horrible lives (Tommy and Tubbo in particular) and died for it without any redeeming factors, regardless of whether or not they learned something or got a conclusion to their story. Even the people who managed to survive the Volume were negatively affected in some way, and you can count all the people who lived on both hands.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic:
    • While Quackity's torture of Dream is demonstrated to be horrific and not anything moral in the slightest, and that Dream is clearly suffering because of it, some fans find it distasteful due to Dream having been shown to be a horrendous person himself, due to both physically and mentally abusing Tommy, threatening to kill Tubbo in front of Tommy, planning on trapping Skeppy in a 1×1×2 cage and someone else inside Pandora's Vault, and destroying people's homes several times over. This has led some to question the writing, believing it to be a case of shoving sympathy down the audience's throat for a character who really doesn't deserve it at this point.
    • This also extends to Sam, as the Warden of Pandora's Vault. The maximum-security prison demonstrates a rules-first, people-second mentality and protocol is typically followed to the letter. However, this ends devastatingly as Sam's general adherence to the strict prison protocol ends up indirectly killing Tommy and Ghostbur, and later directly killing Ranboo.
  • Unpopular Popular Character: Due to the nature of roleplay, several characters who are hated in-universe are very well-liked by the fandom. It helps that several despicable characters are played by very likeable content creators, causing fans of the content creators to like the characters they portray; this phenomenon is typically known as "content creator bias".
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: Despite the medium being the family-friendly Minecraft and the simple stick-figure avatar of Dream, his server is NOT for kids in the slightest. Even TommyInnit and Tubbo, who were still teenagers at the start of the SMP, are sources of Cluster F-Bombs and Vulgar Humor galore. The actual plot of the Dream SMP roleplay is quite dark as well, featuring plenty of mature topics such as authoritarianism and tyranny, the violent destruction of an entire city-state, abuse, mental health, trauma, suicide, etc.
  • Woolseyism: The episode versions of several Dream SMP livestreams have been rereleased on Quackity's Spanish YouTube channel with Mexican Spanish captions, with some minor changes. For instance, in the first "Las Nevadas" episode (the 16 March 2021 one), instead of being addressed by Schlatt as his "sugar pumpkin" in his note, c!Quackity gets called "mi amorsito precioso" and "mi cariñito precioso" (roughly "my precious sweetheart" and "my precious love/dear", respectively, with diminutives).
