YMMV / Dragon Ball Super Great Saiyaman Arc

Go To

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Is Cocoa's tears a genuine reaction to her reluctance about framing Gohan of infidelity, a ploy to attract Gohan to come closer to make the image of a tryst for the photographer to see and shoot, or both?
  • Broken Base: The fandom has different opinions of this Mini-Arc (one YouTube site, for instance, included the Arc in a "Worst Filler Episode List" and then recommended it in a "Best Filler Episode List" a short time later). Some fans enjoy the Arc, with its focus on Gohan & Videl after being sidelined for half of the Dragon Ball Super series, liking the strong portrait of their relationship, happy that Gohan actually saved the day for once, and found Barry Kahn an interesting villain. However, other fans, especially those who dislike Gohan's "Great Saiyaman" characterization in general, see it as more Badass Decay for Gohan.
  • Fridge Horror:
    • Has Barry Kahn previously manipulated other cast & crew members in the past? Has he asked any of them to perform a darker service for him? Has he ruined their careers or desperate need of employment when they refused? Is Videl the first married woman he tried to seduce, or the first one to refuse?
    • Has Cocoa experienced similar situations like the one Barry forced on her? Judging by her surprise at Gohan's kindness to her, she probably hasn't met that many good males in her career.
  • Homage: The "Mr. Satan VS the Great Saiyaman" movie is a nod to Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.
  • Retcon: The sequence of Gohan's reunion with the Bank Robbers, and the flashback of their past encounter are based on the original Manga (which portrayed the fight as Videl's first meeting of the Great Saiyaman and led to her outing Gohan and blackmailing him to participate in the 28th Tenkaichi Budokai). Although they appear in the second Opening, Gohan never actually encountered these opponents in Dragon Ball Z, which gave a different version of how Videl met Great Saiyaman and learned his true identity.
