YMMV / Doctor Who S6 E5 "The Seeds of Death"

Go To

  • Captain Obvious Reveal: Although the Ice Warriors are present "off-camera" in the Moonbase from early on, and their leader's voice are heard throughout the first episode, they do not appear on-camera until the Episode One cliffhanger. This is presented as a surprise reveal, but anyone who has seen their previous appearance will have known who the distinctive hissing voice belonged to as soon as they heard it.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The series depicts a future Earth where humanity has largely lost interest in space travel. When it was released in 1969, The Space Race was in full swing, with the first moon landing only months away. At that time, the idea of humanity losing interest in space travel was unthinkable. However, by The New '10s, federal governments had by and large lost interest in funding expensive space exploration ventures, and the province of space travel was largely limited to vanity projects by multimillionaire corporate executives and their friends.
  • Signature Scene: The cliffhanger at the end of Episode Five, with the Doctor being submerged in foam, is the most famous scene in this serial and one of the most memorable of the Second Doctor's era.
  • So Okay, It's Average: In fan polls and rankings, this story invariably lands close to the middle. Like its similarly-regarded predecessor "The Ice Warriors", it competently executes the base-under-siege formula without offering anything special or original.
  • Special Effects Failure: The evil fungus is soap suds, generated from the same machine as used on "Fury from the Deep"
