YMMV / Doctor Dog

  • Informed Wrongness:
    • Gerty is meant to be wrong for not wearing a raincoat because she gets tonsillitis. However, despite the old myth, that's not how tonsillitis is acquired.
    • Fiona is painted in a bad light for getting an earache, which isn't anybody's fault.
    • While Baby was wrong in not washing his hands after using the bathroom and then immediately sucking his thumb, effectively making his worms worse, Doctor Dog berates the whole family for "making themselves ill", indicating that he thinks it's his fault for catching them in the first place, which it wasn't.
    • Granddad is portrayed as wrong for eating so much baked beans and drinking so much beer that he has gas. However, if gas is his only problem, then he clearly isn't an alcoholic and he doesn't have any nutritional issues.
    • Ma and Pa are meant to be neglectful parents for "allowing" their children to get sick, but at least in Kurt's case, it was explicitly said that he was keeping his smoking a secret, so they had no way of knowing. It also wasn't their fault that Fiona got an earache, and while they could have encouraged Baby to wash his hands, it wasn't their fault that he caught the worms.
  • Squick: The boil bursting and Baby's worms.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: The Gumboyles. They're described as "pesky" but are they really that bad? Baby is only two, so how's he to know that you need to wash your hands if he's never been taught? And the kids' problems of lice, motion sickness, mosquito bites and earache could have happened to anyone. Kev's boil was just random bad luck, and gas is a normal biological function so the farting-the-roof-off incident was just a freak accident. Gerty's tonsillitis is probably also just random bad luck because you can't really Catch Your Death of Cold and children catch colds more easily, so it's not her fault for catching a cold, and the motion sickness is definitely not her fault. The parents were certainly at fault for not taking responsibility or teaching their youngest son to wash his hands, and Kurt was a bit foolish for smoking, but other than that, they're not all that bad.
  • Woobie Family: Sure, they're put in a negative light, but the Gumboyles are, when all is said and done, just a very unlucky family.
