YMMV / Diamond Dogs

  • Contested Sequel: Considering that Diamond Dogs is the result of multiple projects Bowie envisioned at the time, it's no wonder why many criticized its lack of cohesiveness. That being said, Bowie biographers consider it one of his best works and NME ranked it one of the greatest albums of all time.
  • Fanon:
    • When Bowie showed up on Top Pop to perform "Rebel Rebel", he donned a distinctively bizarre pirate getup. According to him, he needed the eyepatch because he contracted conjunctivitis, and the pirate outfit was him taking the piss. Nevertheless, a wide contingency of fans headcanon this costume as being Halloween Jack, a character offhandedly mentioned in the album's Title Track.
    • Halloween Jack is generally assumed to be the main protagonist of the album's loose story, since he's the only named character who isn't either a historical figure or an antagonist. Additionally, even though there's nothing in the album to suggest that, there's nothing that outright contradicts the interpretation either.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The cry of "This ain't rock and roll, this is genocide!" between "Future Legend" and "Diamond Dogs" is eerily prescient of Bowie's sinister Nazi Nobleman persona on his album Station to Station.
  • Signature Song: "Rebel Rebel" was the album's biggest hit and became a perennial staple of both live shows and Greatest Hits Albums. Bowie's last single before his hiatus in the 2000s even mashed up a re-recording of the song with the Reality cut "Never Get Old".
