YMMV / Days of Heaven

Go To

  • Award Snub: Although it picked up a well-deserved Academy Award for its Cinematography (on top of three other nominations), the film failed to receive nominations for Best Picture or Director for Terrence Malick.
  • Ending Fatigue: Even after the fields burn out and Billy kills the farmer, the film still has 20 minutes left to go. What's left of the film includes Billy, Abby, and Linda fleeing once again before Billy is caught by the police and gunned down, Abby drops Linda off at a boarding school before leaving town to aid World War One soldiers, and the film concludes with Abby escaping the boarding school with a friend, though the final narration is strangely non-conclusive, instead commenting on what little Linda knows of her friend.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: The gorgeous and almost revolutionary cinematography is considered to this day the movie's biggest draw, with special mention going to it using only natural lighting. It's no wonder it won the Oscar for Best Cinematography that year.
  • Signature Scene: This shot of Billy and the other men standing in front of the house as locusts flee the fields due to it being arguably the most impressive shot in a film already filled with fantastic shots.
  • What Do You Mean, It's Not Symbolic?: There are the obvious Biblical references (lovers pretending to be brother and sister to avoid trouble, locusts and fire wiping out fields), as well as the seemingly random cuts to shots of animals and plants.
