YMMV / DarkMatter2525

Go To

  • Base-Breaking Character: Jeffery. For some, he's the best character on the channel and a perfect foil to God. Delivering great comebacks and sarcastic reactions to the absurd situations God and some of humanity create. For others, they find him to be a bland, preachy character who is unentertaining compared to the rest of the colorful characters on the channel as well as being a blatant self-insert for DarkMatter himself.
  • Don't Shoot the Message: DarkMatter2525’s condemnation of circular reasoning, discussing the dangers of extremism, and critiques on the flaws of organized religion are sound, but they tend to get lost in his infamous anti-religious sentiments. Most often is when he discusses the flaws of organized religion and believing in God, he will mention how both systems of belief are easy to corrupt and both potentially employ flawed reasoning, like letting subjective views influence objective fact. The problem is his arguments are often presented in a manner that can be easily interpreted as hostile to religion, using strawmen to support his arguments and making mean-spirited jokes at the expense of religious believers. This also tends to make him look like a hypocrite, criticizing those who let emotions influence their logic while he lets his own emotions influence his logic.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Satan, aka Lucy Fur, is a fan favorite due to her adorable design and lovably trollish personality.
  • Fridge Brilliance: The channel's name is Darkmatter2525. The number 2525 is the angel number which stands for making positive changes in ones life. The character Jeffery is an angel that criticizes God and strives for making the world a better place. Dark matter consists of particles without light and this concept does not originate from religion. Basically it's an allegory for the need to accept darkness and the unknown and rely on science rather than religion for that.
  • Genius Bonus: In "God's God", Yahweh encounters a being claiming to have created him (and presumably other gods) by "dancing" him into existence. While DarkMatter is clearly mocking the Christian Creation Myth, the Hindu Creation Myth is often depicted as the Nararaja, where Shiva Nataraja set all movement in the universe into motion through dancing in a depiction of the cyclical nature of creation and destruction. The Henotheistic nature of Hinduism would have also led to the creation of many of the gods who exist in the universe.
  • Karmic Overkill: Some fans think the Prison Episode of Power Corrupts, in which a Brought Down to Normal Yahweh is stuck in a Hellhole Prison for decades and is forced into hard labor and Sisyphean tasks, implicitly without rest, food, drink, or bathroom breaks, was a little excessive even keeping in mind all he had done until then, and before Jeffery reveals that he was merely showing Yahweh the Original Position Fallacy, agreed with him that Jeffery was doing it out of petty revenge for similar treatment (though his confinement lacked the hard labor) even if they assumed this was a case of Not So Above It All on Jeffery’s part. Since Yahweh not only learns nothing from this, but goes full-on Tautological Templar and A God Am I (despite at this point knowing full well he is a human in a simulated reality and not truly God) it can be argued his imprisonment only caused a Villainous Breakdown and that Jeffery’s death was preventable, and that Yahweh’s Heel Realization upon leaving the simulation would have made more sense if he had gotten the message from his prison treatment instead, as Jeffery had intended.
  • Love to Hate: DarkMatter's version of God is an idiotic, megalomaniacal, narcissist who ignores many real world problems he can easily fix in an instant and commits heinous acts on people just for the fun of it. But his extremely over-the-top nature and charismatic attitude make him utterly fun to watch.
  • Mexicans Love Speedy Gonzales: Despite the fact that DarkMatter criticizes religion very harshly, some less devout religious people actually find his videos to be hilarious. They also find his Power Corrupts series to be an interesting sci-fi story with very interesting philosophical discussions, ideas, and characters.
  • Narm: The awkward running animation. It can mostly be overlooked in his more comedic videos. But during his more serious videos, like the Power Corrupts series, it can take a viewer slightly out of the moment and have them unintentionally laughing.
  • Shallow Parody: The animations mainly criticize religions (mostly Christianity and Islam) whilst promoting atheism. While he does make some good points like pointing out the problems of circular reasoning, most of the time it seems the creator's understanding of said religions is limited to common inaccurate stereotypes and their worst members. To be fair to him, he does try to justify it here.
  • Unintentionally Sympathetic: Many viewers of the first few episodes of the Power Corrupts series came to sympathize with Yahweh, considering him a Jerkass Woobie because all his bullying behavior both within and without the simulation is caused by a desire to be loved unconditionally, since his parents don’t, but unfortunately his father’s abuse has corrupted his view of what love is, causing him to continue the cycle of abuse. The writer’s response to this was to make Yahweh even more unrepentant and tyrannical, being completely incorrigible and always worsening his behavior whenever challenged, only changing for the better after accidentally killing Jeffery in the real world, his newfound maturity seeming to come out of the blue. Though Yahweh is written as sympathetic, we are only meant to sympathize with him after his Character Development, not before it.
