YMMV / Damien: Omen II

Go To

  • Adorkable: Charles Warren. His speech and mannerisms as well as his obliviousness to everything until he finds out two-thirds into the film. His clumsiness on the frozen lake, and on top of that, being a museum curator. Picture him with a bow tie and you just wanna hug him.
  • Evil Is Cool: Damien may be Satan incarnate, but him marching out at the end in his uniform and nice coat, fully aware of what he is, is quite an impressive sight.
  • Funny Moments:
    • Damien and Mark complaining about their aunt Marion, particularly about her choice of fragrance.
Damien: Old ladies douse themselves in it! No one knows why.
Murray: Now, boys, just because Aunt Marion is getting on...
      Mark: On our nerves!
  • Moral Event Horizon: Whilst Damien is seen by many as inherently and knowingly evil, thus crossing the horizon the instant he drew breath, the moment he kills his best friend and cousin Mark is pretty much the death of what little shred of humanity he possessed.
  • Narm:
    • When Joan gets hit by a truck, she (or rather a very obvious dummy with her red frock and a wig) somehow leaps over the speeding vehicle in defiance of physics. It's a shame because it spoils the previous scene where she is attacked by the raven, which is really effective and harrowing to watch.
    • The number of times the name "Bugenhagen" is repeated.
    • Joan's dogged insistence of warning the Thorns of the threat of Damien, then suddenly deciding to shut up because she needs to go get hit by a truck.
  • Special Effects Failure:
    • As mentioned in Narm, Joan's death is so ridiculous it could honestly be described as this woman hitting an 18 wheeler. It's astonishing this tiny irrelevant clip wasn't cut from a mostly handsome production.
    • The lengthy closeups of the crow attacking Joan's head are rather less than convincing. If the scene were cut by 90% it would have been far more effective.
  • Tear Jerker: Damien's murder of Mark. Mark being one of the few people Damien cares about makes his death possibly the most tragic of the trilogy.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Mark and Bugenhagen's deaths, while they do affect the plot, may not have been necessary and their survival to be involved in Omen III: The Final Conflict might have been interesting.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Damien's Protagonist Journey to Villain is sorely underutilized. Damien is horrified at discovering who he is, yet is over it a scene later. Likewise, his cousin Mark learns the truth which results in Damien murdering him, while a very strong scene, could have compellingly worked for half a feature. But before Damien murders Mark he is shown to have some signs of empathy and a genuine affection for Mark. The entire movie could have been about Damien's internal conflict, his doomed fight against his destiny, with Mark as the metaphorical angel on his shoulder, or possibly an antagonist that Damien is reluctant to kill.
