  • Anchored Ship: The animated series was made after the movie, however it was decided not to build upon the ending of The Movie which established that Brent and Lacey had been an Official Couple for some time. The cartoon hasn't (as yet) incorporated anything to suggest a break-up or Ship Sinking scenario; it just isn't a "thing" in the animated show.
  • Awesome Music: The opening and ending themes, definitely.
    • The Archies-style remix of the theme from "Cat River Daze."
  • Designated Villain: Karen in The Good Ol' Table Hockey Game.. She doesn't antagonize Brent during the series or do anything villainous, but the entire town minus her and Davis are rooting for Brent.
  • Epileptic Trees: When minor character Wes stopped appearing, people began to make theories about it. Lampshaded when he appears in the 5th season finale:
Hank: I thought you died or moved to Winnipeg or something...
Wes: Nope, I've always been here. You guys just didn't seem too interested in calling me.
    • Hank's line was actually an inside joke as Wes's actor actually moved to Winnipeg around that time.
  • Fan-Preferred Couple: Lacey/Brent was majorly popular, despite the Ship Sinking. It was the ship.
    • But The Movie reraises this ship by a reveal in the last few minutes.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight
    • A joke in an early episode has Davis explaining his theory that Battlestar Galactica could have actually happened. Just plausible enough from the original series. But if you flash-forward to the finale of the reimagined series, this is exactly what's said to have happened.
    • In Doc Small, Wanda tricks Brent (and apparently Hank) by telling him the bills smell like pine trees. In 2013, the Canadian Government introduced bills that Canadians claimed smelled like maple syrup.
    • In one episode, Oscar comments "What kind of army would hire a guy with a beard?" when discussing a bearded G.I. Joe. In 2018, the Canadian Armed Forces revised its policy on beards, allowing all personnel to grow one after completing their trades qualification.note
    • Wanda calling Brent hot (to Lacey’s bewilderment) in the season 2 premiere becomes funnier when one remembers that Nancy Robertson and Brent Butt were likely dating or even engaged by then and would marry a year after the episode aired.
    • In "Poor Brent" Brent asks Hank if he likes amethyst (the gem stone) and he thinks Brent is talking about a stripper or wrestler. Nine years after this episode aired, we get Steven Universe, with a character named Amethyst who actually does turn out to be a wrestler in a few episodes.
  • Launcher of a Thousand Ships: Lacey. In addition her canon ship with Brent, she gets shipped with Karen, Hank, and Davis.
  • Special Effect Failure:
    • In “Grad ‘68”, the Chroma Key effect used in the scene with Karen and Davis on top of the water tower is rather cheap-looking and unconvincing. The matte lines are noticeably wobbly and the parallax with the background is off when the camera zooms out.
    • In “Merry Gasmas”, Oscar and Emma's car has been digitally added into the exterior shots of the house. Also, the falling snow in the scene where Karen, Davis and Hank deliver presents to the Buckles was clearly added in post.
    • In seasons 5 and 6, many shots of characters standing in doorways—most often at Oscar and Emma’s house—were clearly filmed in front of a green screen. The lighting also often doesn’t match between the shots facing outdoors and the shots facing the house (very sunny and backlit in the former and more diffused in the latter).
  • Squick: Brent once installs a security camera in the titular gas station. At the end of the episode, his parents...play a game in the store while it's closed. The camera catches footage of it. The... "leadup" is shown to Lacey with Brent and Wanda in the room. He denies any romance behind it after Lacey mentions how she supposes all parents have a hidden love life (his parents spoke of "checking under a hood") and has ripped the camera off the wall.
  • The Woobie: Nothing ever seems to go right for Lacey.
