  • Reverend Brooks spearheading the "Cold Turkey" effort became this just a few years after the film's release, when Dick Van Dyke admitted to having had a serious drinking problem for the previous two decades.
  • Bob Newhart (like his co-star Van Dyke) was a longtime smoker well into the '80s, until he was forced by doctors to quit in 1985 after being rushed to the hospital for secondary polycythemia.^note According to Wikipedia, a disease state in which the hematocrit (the volume percentage of red blood cells in the blood) and/or hemoglobin concentration are elevated in peripheral blood.
