  • Complete Monster: The unnamed interrogator is an ice-cold member of the Secret Police tasked with getting a children's author to admit she put anti-government messages in her stories. Subjecting the author to all sorts of horrific, increasingly painful tortures and psychological mind games to get her to crack, the interrogator is also implied to have molested her as a child.
  • Faux Symbolism: The whole purpose of the Author's torture.
  • Mind Game Ship: A lot of the Youtube comments about this film seem to relate to this, if only because it's Alan Rickman.
  • Narm:
    • Rickman can get a little narmy when he speaks as three characters at once.
    • The Interrogator kissing the Author with a mouthful of garlic to overly-dramatic music.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The Interrogator's methods, especially later. Heck, the entire movie.
  • Paranoia Fuel: The very probably innocent author is pulled from her bed in the middle of the night, held without an attorney, interrogated and tortured, and it's implied that this is completely legal. Also, her conversations at her mother's deathbed years earlier have been recorded and kept by the government, which also seems legal. The Interrogator also seems to know intimate details of her life, like the last person she slept with, or tried to, anyway, and how the encounter panned out.
