YMMV / CHUNITHM

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: In the song "IMPACT", Takenobu Mitsuyoshi says "Air-Action, let's go!" several times, referring to the Air-Action note type. However, because of how quickly he says "Air-Action", it sounds like he's saying "Erection, let's go!"
  • Awesome Music:
    • Grab your sword, a cheerful if cheesy song about optimism and family.
    • Paula Terry's cover of "Butterfly". Yes, that "Butterfly".
  • Fandom Rivalry: Of a sort, in the U.S.: many "hardcore" players of rhythm games who went to the maimai U.S. location tests found themselves disappointed by it and would much rather they get this game instead.
  • Friendly Fandoms: The game enjoys a lot of overlap with players of many other arcade rhythm games, such as the BEMANI franchise, maimai (also a Sega game), and Groove Coaster.
  • Good Bad Bugs:
    • When doing Air notes, the game doesn't actually detect where your hands are along the sensor range or how many there are, just that you're triggering the sensor at all. This is why in many high-level players, if there is more than one Air note at the same time, the player will only raise a hand for one of the notes, as all notes will be triggered by a single wave.
    • Similarly the keyboard sensor doesn't actually know which hand is touching which key, only that a key is being touched. So you can actually get away with one hand "carrying" the pattern of the other such as in a hold-note crossover.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Several early World's End charts are basically Bullet Hell games, where you hold down on one long Hold note and try to dodge damage notes. Then SEGA would release a full bullet hell rhythm game.
  • Memetic Mutation: World Vanquisher pizzaExplanation
  • Pop-Culture Isolation: CHUNITHM is one of the highest-grossing rhythm games in Japan and one of the most sought-after in the non-Japanese rhythm game community, thanks to its refinements to vertical-scrolling lane-based rhythm games, with many people who play it regarding it as one of the best rhythm games since beatmania IIDX; particularly rich rhythm game players will gladly pay thousands of US dollars just to have reverese-engineered cabs with the Copy Protection disabled shipped to their homes. Perhaps because of this foreign demand, SEGA would later release an international version of the game in East Asia, Southeast Asia, and Oceania. Likely due to being an Arcade Game with No Port For You, it is virtually unknown outside of the non-Japanese rhythm game community, with many Westerners in particular still believing that DanceDanceRevolution is Japan's premier rhythm game by a wide margin (assuming they don't believe Konami doesn't make games anymore), or believing rhythm games to be a "dead" genre.
  • Porting Disaster: CHUNITHM NEW and NEW PLUS were released natively for Gold Cabinets, but also got ported to the Silver Cabinet hardware for Japanese arcades keeping the Silver Cabinets as well as the international version, which only uses Silver Cabinets. Unfortunately, the Silver Cabinet builds of these versions have 10 frames of input lag.
  • Shocking Moments:
    • "Aleph-0" by LeaF getting added to the game in CHUNITHM SUN (as well as to Taiko no Tatsujin, another commercial rhythm game) shocked many rhythm game fans due to the song being previously only allowed to be used in non-profit games like Phigros and Orzmic. LeaF explained on Twitter that she felt that "BMS and non-profit games only" was now an outdated stance for her.
    • SUN PLUS has the usual "ロシェの宝物庫" map, which contains a Penguin Statue that can be used to raise your characters' level caps. Except the iteration issued at launch is called "ロシェの宝物庫 SUN PLUS?" Not only does it contain a statue, but it also contains a song unlock..."neu" from pop'n music, of all things!
    • The "Secret AREA: MUSIC GAME" map series features songs from other rhythm games as unlockables. Nobody expected "Spasmodic" from Phigros, a non-profit rhythm game, to be one of those songs!
  • Unexpected Character: On September 27th 2020, SEGA announced that they would be adding songs from Chargeman Ken! of all anime on October 1st 2020. This may feel like a late April Fools joke but nope, this actually happened, and here's the proof.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion:
    • Chuni Penguin, commonly thought to be male or agendernote , is in fact female.
    • Areus, despite having a muscly, "manly" build, is actually genderless.
