YMMV / Calling All Creeps!

Go To

  • Do Not Do This Cool Thing: While it is cathartic to have Ricky come out on top after all the abuse he suffered, one must remember that he is throwing away his humanity, as well as his only human friend, so he can join a group that are even worse bullies than his own school, and presumably recruit vulnerable kids like him with promise of power and respect to turn them into unswavering drones out to assimilate humanity.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: The Creeps are among some of the more well-liked monsters due to their cool designs, bombastic, silly personalities, and actually succeeding in their school takeover by the end of the book. They also play a big role in the second arc of the IDW comics.
  • Spiritual Adaptation: The plot is rather like a much Lighter and Softer version of Carrie.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Plenty of fans are not happy with how the 2018 ebook version of this book changed the Creeps telling Ricky that everyone at his school would be his slaves if he was their ruler to simply telling him that they would just follow him. The main argument against this is that it ruins the shock value and the impact of the ending involving Ricky becoming ruthless and taking over the school.
  • Unintentional Period Piece: In a number of ways.
    • The lack of technology on display dates the story to the '90s.
    • While still a problem in today's society, bullying is taken much more seriously today than it was when the book was published.
  • Values Dissonance: Ricky publishes Tasha's phone number in the hopes that she'll get harassed (or attempts to, anyway). Good luck making that look heroic in this day and age.
