- Cliché Storm: But a very entertaining and over-the-top one.
- Ensemble Dark Horse: Moonface plays a small role in the series but is one of the most memorable characters, due to his distinct appearance and mannerisms.
- Fan Nickname:
- Tokiko, aka "Scar-tan".
- Kazuki in Victor Mode: Super Saiyajin Kazuki.
- Fashion-Victim Villain: After his transformation into a homunculus, Papillon dons an outfit more appropriate for an ice dancer than a villain, but which he considers to be fabulous. Most characters are weirded out by his bizarre fashion sense (except for his family and Cloudcuckoolanders like Kazuki and Captain Bravo.) Anything else he wears post-transformation will be equally strange and unsettling.
- Hilarious in Hindsight:
- In the Beach Episode, after Kazuki and Tokiko see Captain Bravo surfing, he responds with "YES! I AM!", which is the catchphrase of Mohammed Avdol from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. It's even funnier after Captain Bravo's seiyuu voiced Avdol in All Star Battle.
- The first arc involves a teenage boy and a powerful, teenage, blue-haired girl fighting against humans who have been turned into monsters by a butterfly-themed villain (with a french name, no less) that the boy knows in his non-heroic life, with all three gaining power from transformation trinkets about the size of a deck of cards. Sounds like someone did Ladybug and Chat's story a few years early!
- Ho Yay: Size comparison seems to be a recurring sub-theme in the series: in episode 18, we see Kazuki and Gouta taking a leak in a river, side by side. Gouta turns to take a peer at Kazuki and immediately thinks that, compared to him, he's an "UNDERDOG!!!" (complete with English text!)
- Jerkass Woobie: Koushaku Chouno, better known now as (or as he prefer to be called) Papillon. Yeah, he’s a little insane, but it’s clear he’s not well-liked by his family and is disinherited in favour of his brother Jiro due to being Held Back in School due to illness despite his high IQ. After killing Jiro, he is constantly mistaken as him by their family during his siege as Papillon, including by his own father. Ouch.
- Overshadowed by Controversy: By sheer association with its creator more than anything, since while it never was the most popular series even in its time, these days, it's impossible to talk about it, or any of Nobuhiro Watsuki's works without at least mentioning that he was charged for possession of child pornography in 2017.
- Retroactive Recognition: Kazuki was one of Jun Fukuyama's earlier roles, these days he's far more recognized as Lelouch Lamperouge/Lelouch vi Britannia from Code Geass, the role that catapulted him to superstardom.
- What Do You Mean, It's Not Symbolic?: In episode 2, when Kazuki leaps into the air to dodge the frogs' attack, you get a clear shot of the moon with a strange ring around it. It turns out that that's the alchemical symbol for gold... or also the Sun.
