YMMV / Breaking Bad S4 E13: "Face Off"

Go To

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Hector has a brief look of sadness before he rings the bell. Is he trying to lure Gus into a false sense of security? Or does he feel some remorse for what he did to Gus? Or maybe a bit of both.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The destruction of Gustavo Fring's superlab becomes significantly less awesome after Better Call Saul revealed just how much effort was put into building it in the first place. Furthermore, Howard Hamlin's corpse was buried underneath its floor, meaning Walt blowing up the lab dooms any chance of the world finding out what really happened to Howard after his supposed overdose in 2004.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: The fact that Heisenberg uses Hector's bell as the trigger to set off the bomb that kills Gustavo Fring can be considered to be this, given that the bell was given to Hector by Lalo, the very first member of Hector's family that Gustavo directly killed. In a way, it also means Lalo got the last laugh on Gustavo after all as well!
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Jesse telling Brock's doctor that the kid might have been poisoned by ricin aroused some suspicion from the police because of how specific and lesser-known the poison is. When questioned about it, Jesse lies and says he learned about it from watching TV. Thanks to this series, more people in the general public have been made knowledgeable of ricin so knowing about it would not be as far-fetched as it was in-universe.
  • It Was His Sled: Gustavo Fring's disfigurement and death is one of the most frequently discussed moments of the entire show, to the point where even those that have otherwise never watched the series are aware of it.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • It's revealed that Walt poisoned Brock (albeit non-lethally) as part of an elaborate scheme to get Jesse on his side against Gustavo. For many, this was the moment Walt's moral compass was permanently shattered.
    • Walt also crosses this when he talks one of his elderly neighbors into going into his house to make sure the coast is clear. It's purely dumb luck (and probably Gustavo's preference for hiring people with some sense of discretion) that this just results in the waiting assassins sneaking out of the house before they can be seen, instead of her either being shot dead for being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or triggering a bomb.
  • Narm: Some people consider Gustavo's last vocalization to be this. It's meant to be a wordless cry of horror and realization, but it comes out as "HAUL!" as if he's telling his associate to "Haul ass!"
  • One-Scene Wonder: Becky, the Whites' neighbor whom Walt uses to unknowingly lure out the mooks.
  • Signature Scene: Gustavo Fring's death scene is considered one of the most iconic death scenes in pop culture history.
  • Squick: Gustavo's burnt face is shown in all of its gruesome glory before he dies.
