YMMV / Blair Witch

Go To

  • Ending Fatigue: The climax in the attic, and even in general, seems to drag on for a pointless amount of time. The viewer already knows full well that the characters are doomed at this point and their attempts to stop their deaths by facing the corner so they don't look directly at the Blair Witch do nothing but stretch out those last few minutes. It's especially noticeable when Lisa is the last one standing and it's what feels like an eternity of her just whimpering into the camera and doing nothing.
    • The 2019 game has this too, when you enter the cabin you spend an butt-numbing 30 minutes in it.
  • Heartwarming Moments: After the reveal that Talia and Lane faked the stick figures, and possibly the whole thing, James collapses into a sobbing lump, his last hope of finding his sister dashed. The group rallies around him for emotional support, making sure he's okay, and finally Peter, his best friend, says he's going to give him a hug. James laughs, and says he doesn't need a hug, but Peter says he's getting one anyway. And James did need a hug.
  • Hype Backlash: Back when it was known as The Woods, many writers covering the first trailer's release brought up the possibility of this happening. This was because many of the critic quotes in the trailer were mentioning it as one of the scariest movies ever. However there is a division of people who actually are up for the sequel to the original, especially with it ignoring the controversially panned Book of Shadows.
  • I Knew It!: Some people had theorized that The Woods was in some way related to The Blair Witch Project, be it a remake or a sequel. Those people were later proven correct with the Blair Witch reveal. The production staff and Lionsgate had anticipated that during the production. Only a select few were clued in on the secret, so if anyone had tried to check in with Lionsgate to confirm rumors of a The Woods-Blair Witch Project connection before the reveal, the rumors would be denied by someone who wasn't lying about it...because they weren't informed about the whole truth.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: A common criticism of the film is how much it uses the same scares from the original without adding much beyond scaling them up.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Inverted. There were some people that were looking forward to The Woods and were disappointed to find out that it was going to be a sequel to The Blair Witch Project.
  • Narm:
    • The constant screaming becomes so regular that it begins to become comedic.
    • The bleating way that Lisa whimpers at the very end of the film.
    • Somehow, some way, music starts playing after a character gets their spine snapped. This is a found footage movie.
    • Crossing with Nightmare Retardant - Whilst the revelation that the original footage found online is actually the future fate of the characters is a genuinely creepy one, it means the the Blair Witch set up a YouTube channel.
  • Nightmare Fuel:
    • The song in the trailer.
    • One clip we're shown in the trailer involves one member of the group blaming another member for them suddenly being surrounded by wooden effigies. In anger she breaks one, and apparently the person she was accusing snaps in half.
    • Though they're very brief glimpses at the climax of the film, we finally see what may very well be the Blair Witch. It's... Not pretty, to say the least. Made even worse by the revelation that, as the filmmakers later confirmed, that's not the Blair Witch, but rather one of her former victims under her control. So now we must wonder: if that's how horrible the servant is, how unimaginably horrifying must the Witch herself be?
  • Shocking Moments: The final parts of the film, starting with the reveal of the Blair Witch stick figures hanging in the trees, Talia being snapped in half, and everything inside the house of the first one.
  • Squick: Ashley's foot wound and grows more and more grotesque through the film including the fact it twitches, spreading up her leg and when she further inspects it, the wound oozes pus before she pulls....something worm-like out of it (or, rather, a tree root, as revealed by the DVD Commentary).
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: Most people would regard this film as an improvement over the second film although still inferior to the original.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • Surprisingly enough, the film has this. Several examples include this: After it's revealed that Talia and Lane made the fake stick figures to scare the group off, Lisa turns to James who slowly goes into a Heroic BSoD due to the fact he really thought Heather was alive.
    • Add to that, during the house climax, James does see Heather, but only for a brief glimpse. The tone of his voice when he screams Heather's name after she vanishes is pitiful.
    • James tearfully apologizing to Lisa in the attic as they both stand in the corner, even implying to mimic Heather's apology scene.
    • The tunnel scene will make you feel sorry for Lisa.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: Some people felt the up to eleven behavior of the woods could’ve gone further than what was shown (which ended up being enough to fit into the trailers). One theory was that the root growing in Ashley’s foot wound could’ve led to a more Body Horror-esque fate of demise, as opposed to her just falling to her death trying to retrieve the drone.
  • The Woobie: James, really. Struggling to deal with Heather's disappearance and he legit still thinks she's alive despite being missing for 20 years really left an effect on the guy.
