YMMV / Blackadder S 3 E 3 Nob And Nobility

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Topper and Smedley both die before they can fully give their side of the story, leaving it open to interpretation as to whether they guessed that Blackadder would try and fake rescuing a French aristo, leading Topper to disguise himself as one with a view to humiliating Blackadder by doing his Dramatic Unmask in front of a large crowd at the French embassy ball, or whether the duo knew ahead of time that the embassy had fallen under revolutionary control and so decided to give Blackadder a first-hand demonstration of what rescuing a French aristocrat actually involves, or went along with the first plan only to realise that the French embassy had been taken over by the revolutionaries, causing Smedley to disguise himself as Madame Guillotine in order to rescue Blackadder out of guilt for having genuinely endangered him. It is also possible that neither of them were fully aware of what the other was doing, which explains why Topper (as Frou Frou) gave Blackadder the suicide pills shortly before Smedley (as Madame Guillotine) appeared.
  • Genius Bonus: The true identity of The Scarlet Pimpernel in the original story is that of an aristocrat named Sir Percy Blakeney. While this show has the Pimpernel as the joint alias of two characters, Topper and Smedley, the former is played by Tim McInnerny — who played Lord Percy in the previous two seasons.
  • Retroactive Recognition: The French revolutionary is played by Chris Barrie. The following year, he would be cast as Arnold J. Rimmer in the long running Red Dwarf.
