YMMV / Ben 10: Alien Swarm

Go To

  • Arc Fatigue: Gwen and Elena's rivalry goes on for a little too long.
  • Awesome Music: The film's tie-in song, "A Little Faster" by There For Tomorrow, is catchy, fast-paced, and widely considered to be the best part of the movie.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: In this installment, Kevin gets a lot of love, for being one of the only characters who didn't get hit with an Adaptational Personality Change.
    • The middle man from the first scene is praised for being the one of the smartest characters by yeeting himself out of the film within the first 10 minutes.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: Throughout the film, nearly everyone except Ben is shown to be overly distrusting of Elena, believing her to be some kind of double agent until the very end of the film. The Ben 10: Ultimate Alien episode Revenge of the Swarm reveals that everyone was Properly Paranoid, as Elena wasn't just working for the Swarm, she was secretly the true Queen all along.
  • Heartwarming Moments: The cast seemed to have a great experience filming, and frequently post memories to their social media.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: Kevin complaining that he only gets a kiss on the cheek becomes this when Galadriel Stineman had a one off role on Shameless where her character flashes Carl.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: One common complaint is that Ben only transforms into two of his Alien Force aliens and into a brand-new third one, which disappointed many fans who wanted to see the rest of Ben's aliens in CG/live-action.
  • Memetic Mutation: Gwen's unnecessary She-Fu has been getting a lot of mileage from fans lately.
    • Fans have pointed out that this is CN's attempt to make Ben 10 emo. Complete with a Darker and Edgier vibe, Emo Music promo song, and Kevin can be heard listening to Hawthorne Heights in one scene. It's letting you know they're not kids anymore.
    • Fans often mock the opening scene, because it highly resembles a drug deal.
    • "Humongousaur doesn't say HUMONGOUSAUR!"
    • "I don't know who's behind all this, but THEY'RE GONNA FIX MY CAR!!"
    • People often mock the casting of Barry Corbin as Grandpa Max, as he had an onery, distrustful personality completely unlike his cartoon counterpart.
    • With the amount of car/motorcycle shots, the phrase "Too much plot not enough car shots" was born.
  • Narm: Possessed Victor Valadis' acting and voice is a bit harder to take seriously in Live-Action than it would have been in animation. Ironically enough, when possessed Valadis did show up as an animated version in Ultimate Alien, his voice was normal.
  • Narm Charm: As with its predecessor, you won't enjoy this if you take it seriously.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Despite the Narm involved, some scene involving the Swarm and their hosts are actually quite creepy. Particularly when you see the emotionless hosts with chips crawling under their skins...
  • Platonic Writing, Romantic Reading: Ben and Gwen (who are supposed to be cousins) get hit with this hard. Here, Gwen acts like a Clingy Jealous Girl when Elena first shows up.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Ben went on to be the deputy of Beacon County in Teen Wolf.
  • Romantic Plot Tumor: Ben and Elena's romance plotline doesn't go anywhere, despite the big set up.
  • Signature Scene: Humungousaur vs the Nano Machines chasing Kevin and Gwen.
  • Special Effect Failure: The CGI is only slightly improved compared to Race Against Time.
    • When Gwen does a back-hand-spring, you can obviously tell a body double was used.
  • Surprisingly Improved Sequel: While the movie isn't exactly great, it's still generally considered a better movie than its predecessor, to the point some elements from it (mainly Nanomech and Ben's car) made it into Ben 10: Ultimate Alien.
    • Not to mention that the events in the film are canon, unlike in Race Against Time.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The car crash. Ben and Elena could've witnessed it. They could've thought that Gwen and Kevin were hurt or died in the crash. The four could've made up after a near death experience like that, and solve the chips together.
