YMMV / Battlestar Galactica 2003 S 02 E 14 Black Market

Go To

  • Bizarro Episode: Commander Fisk's murder and the growing tension between Roslin and Baltar are the only parts of this episode that are relevant to the rest of the series. Apollo's pregnant girlfriend left behind on Caprica, his relationship with Shevon and the entire black market situation are never mentioned again after this episode. As a result many fans like to toss this episode into Fanon Discontinuity.
  • Complete Monster: Phelan, the ex-military mercenary turned crime lord, runs the titular market, which includes a child prostitution ring. Having Jack Fisk murdered for trying to get more compensation, when investigated by Lee Adama, Phelan kidnaps Shevon and her daughter Paya. Selling the latter into the ring, Phelan threatens to cut up the former in an attempt to get Lee to back down.
  • Fanon Discontinuity: As mentioned, most of the fandom takes this approach to the episode. Details like the death of Commander Fisk (which you can get just by watching the "Previously" at the start of "The Captain's Hand") and the notion that there is a black market in the Fleet are accepted while everything else is ignored. Even the writer and the showrunners didn't like how the episode turned out, as you can hear on Ron Moore's episode podcast.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Resurrection Ship seemed to set up Fisk for some kind of greater arc as he showed a good deal of Hidden Depths and a degree of honor while still obeying Cain. Instead, he's unceremoniously offed in what is otherwise a filler episode.
  • Took the Bad Film Seriously: Bill Duke’s chilling performance as Phelan is the only saving grace in an episode that is otherwise a steaming pile of crap.
  • Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Shevon’s brutal "The Reason You Suck" Speech about Lee using her as a Replacement Goldfish and subsequent breakup with him would have been far more sympathetic had it not come immediately after Lee saved her daughter from child prostitution. Also, one of the knocks against this episode's narrative is that Shevon somehow prioritizes delivering this speech to the main character as if she knows the plot revolves around him instead of more realistically rushing to get her daughter out of a cage, and saving the breakup conversation for a better time and place.
