YMMV / Barbie of Swan Lake

Go To

  • Awesome Art: The magic effects, as well as Swan Lake itself, are very well-animated for the time.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Lila. Some find her shrill voice and snarky personality annoying, others think she's endearing.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: Just like usual, Odile. Especially since she has a clear personality here and provides much of the film's humor.
  • Fandom Rivalry: With The Swan Princess, given that some prefer the Barbie version for being Truer to the Text, others like the Disneyfication aspect the Warner version gives more.
  • Fanon: While it's only vaguely implied in the subtext, the fandom has decided that Odile is a crow or raven given human form by Rothbart. Whether or not Rothbart simply adopted her or turned into a bird himself is up for debate.
  • Genius Bonus: A few of the film's plot elements are actually adapted from various versions of the ballet.
    • One version has the prince commit suicide after Odette does the same due to being stuck as a swan permanently, and their tragic love causes Rothbart to be defeated. Something very similar happens in this film, although in this case them dying for each other is an attempted Heroic Sacrifice on both their parts rather than suicide and they come back to life again afterwards.
    • Odette having a magic crown that protects her from harmful spells comes from the 1877 version of the ballet, where Odette has a magic crown given to her by her grandfather that protects her from her Wicked Stepmother.
  • Just Here for Godzilla: Raise your hand if you are watching the movie just to see Maggie Wheeler or Kelsey Grammer.
  • Strangled by the Red String: Odette and Daniel. Although Odette was aware of who he was, they had never interacted prior to the film's events and they spend just one night together before it's proclaimed they're in love; notably, when her allies bring up the possibility of their love breaking the curse, Odette's main concern is that someone like her isn’t worthy of a prince rather than the fact they only met yesterday. Just two nights later Daniel asks Odette to marry him and they're both prepared to die to protect each other. Admittedly, the film does put in some effort to show what they like about each other so the viewer gets the sense they'll make a happy couple (it's also a fairytale, where Love at First Sight is commonly played straight), but it's still a bit jarring considering how little time they spent together.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Odette's older sister Marie. They both clearly care for each other despite their differing personalities and Marie's boldness -combined with her concern for Odette after she disappears - means she could've made a useful ally in stopping Rothbart. Unfortunately, Marie vanishes from the plot around the mid-point when she and her father go looking for Odette, and her only other appearance is as a guest at Odette's wedding in the ending.
